As we continue honoring National Breastfeeding Month, we turn our attention to the history of forced wet nursing. This practice was a form of exploitation, and its legacy continues to shape the Black maternal health crisis today. Confronting and naming this history is a vital step toward justice and healing ❤️🖤💚

This August is National Breast feeding month, and we’d like to shed light on the historical context with a focus on how systemic racism, generational trauma, and colonial policies have shaped—and disrupted Black and Indigenous feeding traditions. From the forced wet nursing of enslaved Black women to the removal of Indigenous children from their families, these histories continue to impact maternal and infant health today. Breastfeeding is more than nourishment—it’s an act of reclamation, healing, and resistance. This month we honor the wisdom of our ancestors & the work of the community birth workers fighting to restore our traditions.

Today we honor the power, resilience, and brilliance of Black nurses.
As Black Nurses Week begins, we uplift the trailblazers who’ve paved the way—and the next generation of leaders continuing to push the boundaries of care, equity, and justice in healthcare.

Black nurses, especially in maternal and reproductive health, bring more than medical expertise—they bring cultural wisdom, lived experience, and the trust our communities deserve. Their presence is not just valuable—it’s vital to a system that too often fails us.

On July 7, Mayor Eric Adams released a groundbreaking report on the Citywide Doula Initiative — a bold step in addressing NYC’s Black maternal health crisis through community-centered care.

Here’s what the report reveals:
✨ Over 3,200 birthing people served since 2022 — with zero maternal deaths reported among participants
✨ 25% increase in doula coverage across NYC between 2022 and 2024
✨ Nearly half of all births in underserved neighborhoods are now supported by trained doulas

This isn’t just about numbers — it’s about lives protected, births empowered, and a system finally starting to listen.

📣📣 Black Women’s Equal Pay Day isn’t just about a paycheck—it’s about survival. The wage gap limits access to quality healthcare, housing, food, and safe birthing environments—all crucial to Black maternal health. This month, let’s push for justice not only in pay but in care.
