When I stepped into my role as a brand new Director of Nursing, I didn’t have a roadmap.
I didn’t have a mentor to walk me through surveys, systems, or leadership decisions.
I had to learn in real time and build systems from the ground up just to keep my head above water.
What I learned quickly is this:
Good nurses still get cited—not because they’re bad nurses, but because the systems fail them.
On my first recertification survey, I was able to lead my team to zero deficiencies.
And within a year, we moved from a one-star building to four stars.
For a long time, I stayed quiet about it.
I was humble. I kept my head down. I focused on the work.
But after a lot of reflection, I realized—
this is not something to keep to myself.
There are so many new DONs out there doing the best they can, feeling overwhelmed, and wishing someone would just explain how this really works.
This year, I’m choosing to give back.
If you’re a DON—or stepping into a leadership role—and you need support, guidance, or reassurance, you are not alone.
I’m open to answering questions and offering guidance when I can.
You can message me or email me.
Just remember—
we’re all in this together.
