About the Nutrition and Metabolism Society

The Metabolism Society is a 501(c)3 nonprofit health organization providing research, information and education in the application of fundamental science to nutrition. The Society is particularly dedicated to the incorporation of biochemical metabolism to problems of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. To fulfill this mission, the Metabolism Society hosts research conferences, publishes scientific findings, provides educational information and publishes an open-access on-line journal Nutrition and Metabolism. In association with the American Society of Bariatric Physicians, the Metabolism Society hosts scientific conferences on the nutritional and biochemical aspects of carbohydrate restriction. While not advocating any specific dietary strategy, the Society believes that the therapeutic potential of low-carbohydrate diets for the treatment of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease is under-investigated and under-utilized.

Richard Bernstein, MD

Dr. Richard K. Bernstein is hailed as the leading authority in the treatment of diabetes by this Society and more importantly by the thousands of patients he has helped. He has lived a healthy life as a Type 1 diabetic over 63 years after overcoming severe symptoms of his own. His book is
commonly referred to as the "bible for people with diabetes" and is recommended by the Society for all people interested in truly understanding and treating diabetes.

Mary Vernon, MD

Dr. Mary Vernon is Board certified in Bariatric and Family Medicine and is a Certified Medical Director. She has a Certificate of Added Qualification in Hospice and Palliative Care. She maintains a private practice in Lawrence, Kansas. Dr. Vernon speaks regularly on the topics of carbohydrate restriction, weight management and maintenance, and metabolic health. She has been published in medical literature regarding low carbohydrate diets, diabetes and metabolic syndrome and is the author of Atkins Diabetes Revolution. Dr. Vernon received her MD degree from the University of Kansas.

Katharine Morrison, MD

Dr. Katharine Morrison is a General Medical and Forensic Practitioner working in the West of Scotland. She has been low carbing for many years and has a teenage son who has type one diabetes. She encourages her patients to improve their health and weight with a low carb approach and has seen serious complications of diabetes reverse on dietary changes alone.
Dr. Morrison has developed a course for those who need online help to gain mastery of their weight and blood sugars at D-solve. This is the first free comprehensive online course for those who are overweight, have metabolic syndrome, and have type one or type two diabetes. She believes that individuals need information on how to achieve the best results they can on the level of carbohydrate intake that they choose. Highly advanced techniques are explained for insulin users. She is a member of Dr Bernstein's Diabetes Forum and contributes regularly. Her hope is that all doctors and health care professionals will learn of the benefits that a restricted carbohydrate dietary approach can make to their patients.

Dr. Westman serves as the Medical Director of the Duke Center for Ni****ne and Smoking Cessation Research and is a faculty member of the Duke Clinical Research Training Program. The reporter from Men’s Health asked me: “You finish dinner, even a satisfying low-carb dinner,” — he is a low-carb person himself — “you are sure you ate enough but you are still hungry. What do you do?” I gave him good advice. “Think of a perfectly broiled steak or steamed lobster with butter, some high protein, relatively high fat meal that you usually like. If that doesn’t sound good, you are not hungry. You may want to keep eating. You may want something sweet. You may want to feel something rolling around in your mouth, but you are not hungry. Find something else to do — push-ups are good. If the steak does sound good, you may want to eat. Practically speaking, its a good idea to keep hard boiled eggs, cans of tuna fish around (and, of course, not keep cookies in the house).” I think this is good practical advice. It comes from the satiating effects of protein food sources, or perhaps the non-satiating, or reinforcing effect of carbohydrate. But the more general question is: What is hunger?

Yes,a good question. What is hunger and what can you do about it? Richard Feinman is writing about it here. /dk
