When I consider being firmly grounded, I think of the roots of a willow or an elder oak rooting itself into the earth, offering up the strength and stability from which the tree grows and flourishes.

When I consider what it is to “well attend”, I think of the consistency of a honey bee tending to her hive with focus and dedication and care without expectation of anything in return.

In all earnestness for me brings to mind what is most important to me, and what am I willing to do for that.

I come to my mat everyday not to become anything more than grounded in the miracle of me, living on this planet, at this moment.

“Snigdhah sh*ta gururmandah shlakshno mritsnah sthirah kaphah”

Kapha is unctuous, cool, heavy, slow, smooth, soft, and static.

— Ashtanga Hrdayam: Sutrasthana I:12

Late winter into Spring is Kapha season. Kapha is made up of the Earth & Water elements. You can see it in nature; an abundance of water & a heaviness in the earth that naturally accompanies excess water. In you, excess of kapha can show up as resistance to change & physical activity, a heaviness in the mind and feeling stuck or uninspired. Your digestion can feel sluggish, too; you may notice you have a ravenous appetite, but feel a heaviness after meals.

It’s also a time of renewal and energy. The qualities of kapha, when in balance, can allow for smooth joint movement, a soft and empathic heart, good stamina and well formed muscles, as well as a feeling of mental and emotional grounding.

To bring out the best qualities of kapha in you this season, think MOVEMENT! Try to exercise every day .. whether that’s a brisk walk, power yoga or a few jumping jacks. Something to get your heart rate up and get you sweating. Also, have a moderate amount of warming, light and freshly cooked foods to maintain balance and support healthy digestion. And, favor pungent, bitter, and astringent tastes this season.
