Eggs - good or evil?

For decades, eggs were considered to be a healthy part of the American diet.

They’re high in protein, choline (an important part of your cell membranes) and vitamins B, D and E. Like dairy products, the protein in eggs is particularly rich in the amino acid leucine (https://www.askdrlavine.com/leucine/), which has a hormone signaling effect that tells the body to build more muscle. Eggs pack lots of nutrition in a small package.

Then, beginning in the 1960’s, physicians began to worry about the role that cholesterol played in the health of your arteries. Too much cholesterol was bad. And eggs are high in cholesterol, so eating eggs had to be bad too. The 1968 dietary advice given by the American Heart Association suggested limiting your intake to 3 eggs per week.

Since 1968, as our knowledge has grown, the guidelines about egg consumption have shifted too. Though at times different research projects seem to contradict each other (a lot depends on the details,) many studies show that egg consumption actually raises HDL cholesterol (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35745278/) (that’s good!) and other blood markers of healthy metabolism.

Finally, in 2015, new dietary guidelines rewrote the book on eggs. The evidence to limit egg consumption just isn’t there. To begin with, there’s only a weak link between dietary intake of cholesterol and serum cholesterol (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9143438/). And the possibility that eggs help raise HDL cholesterol and other beneficial metabolic indicators also means that recommending a limit to egg intake makes little sense.

Why don’t people take better care of their health?

Everyone agrees that maintaining you health is one of the most important things you can do. At the same time, everyone can easily list three or four ways that they’re neglecting their health.

Why don’t we take better care of ourselves? It’s a complex question. I made a video (https://www.askdrlavine.com/videos/why-dont-i-do-the-things-i-should-do-to-take-care-of-myself/) that touches on some of the relevant issues. Check it out!

Research proves it - chiropractic adjustments are the superior treatment for low back pain.

In 2022,

James Whedon and others (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35101064/) at the Southern California University of Health Sciences looked at the records of more than 55,000 Medicare beneficiaries who had low back pain.

Those who saw a doctor of chiropractor were 55% less likely to also fill an opioid prescription over the next year

In 2023,

Shawn Farrokhi and others(https://academic.oup.com/ptj/article/104/3/pzad173/7477809) examined records from the Military Health System Data Repository. They identified over 4,000 service members who had sought treatment for low back pain.

When spinal manipulation or mobilization was included in the program of care, patients were 50% less likely to end up with an opioid prescription, or receive spinal injections, specialty care visits, or hospitalizations.

These are exceptionally strong results.

NJ State Triathlon - this Saturday!

Here I am at last years’ finish.

This year I turn 70, so I’m in a new age category. It’s my best chance to rank in the top 3! But I give myself only a slight chance.

I’ve been working on my freestyle stroke, but I’m still pretty slow. I’d have to vastly exceed my own expectations, and on top of that, hope that not too many other old guys show up!

Treat your fascia right

* Your fascia is one of the richest sources of feedback to the brain, keeping it aware of movement, orientation in space, contact with others, and the potential for dangerous force overload that could lead to injury.

* Your fascia responds to emotion and stress. It embeds memories of injury, emotional stress and trauma.

* Your blood vessels, nerves, and lymph channels are supported by fascial networks as they travel throughout the body.

* Your connective tissues are vital in maintaining water balance throughout your body. They’re also home to precursor cells of your immune system that wait to be activated in response to invading bacteria or other pathogens.

* I offer a range of connective tissue treatments to restore your body’s natural resilience. Learn how this pathway to better health can help you!

Depression is not due to altered serotonin metabolism

A review of the current data about serotonin metabolism and depression was published (https://neurosciencenews.com/depression-chemical-imballance-21105/) in the July, 2022 issue of Systematic Review.

The findings? There is no relationship between depression and any aspect of serotonin metabolism. Depressed people don’t have changes in their serotonin levels, their serotonin receptors, or serotonin transport molecules.

Why are SSRIs (selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors) so widely used?

They’re the mainstay of the chemistry-first approach to the treatment of depression, but are SSRIs even effective?

The authors of this paper offered two possible answers to these questions. One is that SSRIs have some other effect on the brain separate from their effect on serotonin. The other explanation is that the value of SSRIs is explainable from the placebo effect.

If SSRIs are of questionable value, what are effective alternatives?

Depression is a serious condition, and no simple answer will prove effective for all people. But we know that each of these strategies has been shown to be of some benefit:

* Listen to John Philip Sousa and:
* march in place while waving your arms around
•Listen to John Philip Sousa and march in place while waving your arms around
•Tell someone you admire them
•Join a club or organization
•Get a massage or visit your chiropractor
•Rewrite your story
•Take some fresh mint, rub it between your hands and take a deep sniff
•Go to the art museum
•Walk in your local park
•Limber your spine
•Drink coffee

* Get a good night’s sleep (https://www.askdrlavine.com/poor-sleep-the-hidden-epidemic/)

* Make an appointment with your therapist (https://www.askdrlavine.com/gain-control-over-depression-and-anxiety/)

* Hit the gym (https://www.askdrlavine.com/exercise-treatment-for-depression/)

Take depression seriously! But taking it seriously doesn’t necessarily mean medicating it. There are alternatives.

Calcium supplements don’t restore thinning bones - try this instead!

The use of calcium supplements to prevent or reverse osteoporosis has yielded sketchy results . (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18065599/)

Pharmaceutical options have limitations and risks too. Try this four part program instead. It’s been proven to work.

1. Exercise!
2. Eat plenty of calcium-rich foods, including

• Chia or sesame seeds
• Dairy products
• Sardines
• Beans
• Almonds
• Amaranth
• And more

3. Take the following supplements each morning

• 2000 IU Vitamin D3 (50 mcg)
• 100 mcg Vitamin K2
• 680 mg strontium citrate
• 25 mg elemental magnesium

4. Before bed, take 2.5 mg melatonin

I’ve crafted a combination of high-quality nutrition supplements that fulfills these requirements. If you’re interested, let me know and I can send you the link you need to get access to this protocol from my online nutritional dispensary.

How to make exercise more enjoyable

Some people just don't like to exercise.

Fitness nuts like me just don’t get it. We don't understand why exercise seems like an unrewarding chore to so many.

In the hope of learning more about this issue, I attended a presentation on motivation by a sports psychologist at the Yale University Conference on Embodied Cognition.

I was familiar with some of her ideas: Listen to inspiring music when you exercise. Work out with an exercise buddy. Set goals.
But she shared one strategy that was novel to me. And I want to share it with you.

Do the hard part first

You should structure each exercise session so that the hard work comes first, and then it gets easier. It’s the exact opposite of the way most training is organized.

To apply the principle to weight training, you’d perform one set of repetitions at (say) 80% of your hypothetical maximum weight, followed by a set at 65% of your max, and then finish up at 50%. Most weight training programs do the exact opposite - they start light and work up to heavy.

You can also apply the same principle to cardio training. If, for instance, you plan to run 3 miles, run your first mile most rapidly, then ease off and go slower at the end.

People who use this strategy say they enjoy exercise more. Try it - you'll be more motivated. And soon you can join the ranks of those who truly enjoy a good workout.

A rabbi, feeling spiritually moved, dropped to his knees in his study to begin praying: “Exalted God, Thou who art everything, I am but an insignificant speck of dust in your cosmos….Thy will be done, not mine….” and so forth and so on.

Just then the cantor happened to come by, and, spiritually inspired by the rabbi's devotion, dropped down to his knees to pray: “Exalted God, Thou who art everything, I am but an insignificant speck of dust in your cosmos,…” and so forth and so on.

By chance, the building’s janitor happened to overhear the two men praying. Inspired by the other men, he too dropped down to his knees – “Exalted God, Thou who art everything, I am but an insignificant speck of dust in your cosmos…”

At which point the cantor nudged the rabbi to whisper, “Hmpf! Now look who thinks he’s an insignificant speck of dust….”

Get your tissues moving to improve immune function

Your body chemistry is regulated by twisting, stretching, and compressive forces.

The regulatory molecules of your body are mainly proteins: large, complex molecules that form and re-form into tightly controlled shapes.

The specific shape a protein takes determines its function - if it switches on or off a particular metabolic process, if it allows molecules to pass through a membrane, if it triggers the contraction of a muscle fiber or not.

Change the shape, and you change the chemistry. So the stretching, twisting, compressing, and stiffening forces that tissues experience have a potent regulatory effect.

That's where connective tissue treatments come in. Techniques such as NeuroTactile ® Therapy, Craniosacral therapy, and chiropractic spinal adjustments have a direct effect on the cells of your fascia, and alter their internal chemistry.

Writing in August 2022, Huixun Du and other authors (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41577-022-00761-w) describe in detail the complex ways that immune function is dependent on the biomechanical properties of the tissues in which immune cells reside.

Over the years I've seen first hand how potent the health effects of chiropractic care can be. After I've had my chiropractic treatment, I know my whole health system is working better. And I know that my patients receive a similar boost in their health, oftentimes in surprising ways. I feel grateful that I've been called to this profession that allows me, every day, to have a direct impact on individuals' health.

Controlling lateral shift - the other half of “core support”

Core strength - you know you need it. It’s common knowledge - you’ve got to build strength in your abdominal muscles to control the alignment of your spine and avoid low back pain.
But that’s only the first half of the battle.

Every time you step - thousands, or even ten thousand times a day - your pelvis shifts side to side, as you land alternately on the right and left foot. The lateral shift challenges the sacroiliac joint, piriformis muscle, hip joint, and iliotibial tract.

You need to develop control of the forces of lateral shift. Otherwise, you’re at risk of
• iliotibial band syndrome
• outer hip (trochanter) pain
• piriformis syndrome
• buttock pain
• sacroiliac joint pain
• knee pain
• other repetitive use injuries.

Don’t wait for a problem to emerge — be proactive

Benefit from my 40+ years experience with posture, pattern of body use and rehabilitative exercise.

You’ll gain an understanding of proper alignment and the patterns of muscle activation that support it. You’ll also learn some simple strengthening exercises to shore up the weak links in the kinetic chain that controls lateral shift.

Your inner “muscle sense” connects to the deepest core of your being

Usually we think of our muscles as activators. When they fire off they create the movements that give our life meaning.

But every muscle is also a sense organ. Muscles have sensory nerve endings that initiate feedback loops to control muscle length and tension and provide the brain the information it relies on to sculpt your path through life.

Because adaptively moving in space is the most important human function, the bulk of the tactical planning and feedback that controls movement has been automated, ensuring a quick and efficient response, without relying on conscious thought processes.

When you have pain, joint degeneration, or an injury, it’s not just the physical performance of your muscles and joints that has to bounce back. Your problem has also distorted the automated patterns of movement feedback.

That’s why each of my treatment plans includes a component of movement and body awareness. You have to rebuild your inner smarts.

The goal of most rehab programs is to restore the ability to perform specific movement tasks: in daily life (lift, bend, sit at a computer screen, etc.); or in athletics (run fast, jump high, shoot 3-pointers, smash forehand volleys, etc.)

But body movement also serves as a form of self-expression and communication. Through movement we express our particular brand of self-esteem, our personalized concept of body image, the style with which we connect with others, our emotional state, and much more. Oftentimes, making a shift in our internal movement programming requires making a shift in these deeply embedded elements which we hold as central to ourselves as human beings.

Your muscles, both as movement activators and as sensory receptors, are a profound and rewarding place to look in the quest to connect to the deepest core of your being.

My career (now 42 years and counting!) has been dedicated to helping you find your path forward: towards improved movement performance; and to forge better internal connections among the complex elements that make life so rewarding and such a unique expression of each human being.
