We are so excited to host Cris Patvakanian to discuss his new book, In The Shadow of Mount Khustup, next Friday! Join us to learn about the novel and his writing process. CUAS will provide complementary copies of the book to current students. 📚🏔️

“In the shadow of Mount Khustup lie the secrets, stories, and adventures of the Lazaryan clan. Khatchik Lazaryan, a young engineer and veteran of the 2020 Artsakh war, moves back to his family’s village in southern Armenia to work at the KapanQar Mine. Little does Khatchik know, returning to the land of his ancestors will reignite a spark with his first love, the mysterious but recently engaged Siranoush. Khatchik, who is coping with post-war trauma, soon discovers that not all lights will lead him out of the darkness, and his fight for survival did not stop on the battlefield.

In the Shadow of Mount Khustup is the first modern romance novel published about the Syunik Province of Armenia, and is a story that features the region’s history, cuisine, and local Kapan dialect of Armenian.”

Excited to announce the Spring 2026 Armenian Studies course, taught by Professor Nareg Seferian!

Geography as World-Writing: This course is about space and power. If “geography” is literally “world-writing”, then who is doing the writing, how, and why? Where is the line (the border!) between neutral, descriptive writing about the world and agenda-driven, ascriptive writing upon the world? Moreover, who is the reader of the so-written world? How and why is it to be read? This course invites students to think more deeply about those questions, taking on concepts and categories from the literature of geography, political geography, and geographical imaginations, as well as classical geopolitics and critical geopolitics. Various cases will inform the material of this course – the United States, China, India, Serbia, Senegal, Kenya, and the Middle East more broadly, with some emphasis on Armenia and Azerbaijan and the conflict over Artsakh/Nagorno-Karabakh. This course is designed to be a highly interactive semester-long engagement, based partly on texts and partly on visual discourse, with significant student-designed components. By the end of this course, students will become familiar with a number of analytical thinking tools related to geography, space and place, and power dynamics alongside substantial information on the cases examined. There are no pre-requisites or co-requisites. All accommodations welcome.

Join us for a discussion with on “Shame, Taboo, and Justice” — with research examining how cultural values surrounding sexual violence impact survivors in Armenia and its global diaspora. The conversation explores how shame, silence, and structural gaps in social spheres, law enforcement and legislation create ongoing barriers to justice, both in Armenia and in diasporic communities such as Los Angeles and New York.

Please help support Nairy Bzdigian, a Lebanese Armenian student, attend Teachers College at Columbia this upcoming year! Link to donate in bio ❤️

In Nairy’s words:
“I’ve been accepted to Teachers College, Columbia University — the #1 graduate school of education — to pursue a Master’s in Anthropology and Education. This program will equip me to return and work on reshaping how we teach history, identity, and belonging in Armenia.

While I was awarded the Founder’s Scholarship, I still have a significant amount that I need to cover. This is where your support can truly make a difference.
Whether you donate or share this campaign, you’ll be helping build an education system that empowers youth to understand their past and shape a better future.

Thank you for believing in me, I won’t let you down ❤️”

We are so excited to have Nairy join us at Columbia. Please support in any way you can, whether by donating or sharing this post!
