Providing about the child’s movements and production of the target word, helps shape it to an accurate production.

Before we get into it 📌SAVE for future session planning and follow for more apraxia therapy tips

👄 Knowledge of performance provides specific information about the oral movements the child produced or how they produced the target sounds, i.e. “you rounded your lips” or “you forgot your snake sound”. It is necessary to help the child acquire the motor plan.

🧒🏻 Once the child is generally producing the sounds and movements with greater accuracy, it’s important to fade specific feedback and give more general feedback so that the child does not rely on cues. This is called knowledge of results.

👧🏻 Knowledge of results gives the child general feedback about whether or not the movements and / or word is produced correctly. This means saying, “that’s right” “yes” or “I heard__”

❓Are you familiar with these types of feedback? Any questions? Ask in the comments

I am always asked how to start when a child has little or no sounds.

First….SAVE 📌 this post for future reference and follow for more apraxia tips.

Increasing sound production and sound imitation is a pre-cursor for apraxia therapy.

Modeling sound effects and engaging the child in play with sounds effects is a very effective way to increase

Sound effects are:
* vowel rich, which children attend to
* fun and engaging
* easy to work into play activities
* encourage speech sound production

Children with motor speech disorders can benefit greatly from using augmentative communication devices to enhance their communication skills.

Recently, I started working with a 4-year-old autistic boy who had no verbal communication skills and didn’t have an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) device. My first step was to acquire a speech generating device (SGD) to assist him in expressing his needs. Mastering the use of an SGD is a gradual process that requires patience.

By modeling extensively and incorporating enjoyable activities, he has started navigating through some pages and locating icons independently.

Witnessing him communicate independently with the SGD brings me immense joy.

I have always been a strong advocate for my clients’ use of AAC devices. While I have been part of therapy teams that have obtained devices for children in the past, this was the first time I took the lead in initiating and managing all the paperwork to secure an SGD.

I recently took an excellent course from titled AAC in Early Intervention. This course includes a detailed workbook with valuable handouts to facilitate discussions with parents and other professionals. The handouts will help you dispel the myths and educate them about the benefits of AAC.

Does your child / client finish words that you want them to imitate, instead of imitating the full word?

I call them “word finishers”. No, it’s not a clinical term and we all know children like this. The child needs cues to produce all the sounds in the word.

I use forward chaining, simultaneous production and slow rate.

Practice the first sound in the word several times. Then have the child say it together with you using a slow rate to move the child from the beginning sounds to the final sounds. This helps the child plan and program the movement sequence which is the primary deficit in childhood apraxia of speech.

Do you use chaining in your therapy sessions? Drop a ⛓️.

Children with CAS often struggle to vary their intonation patterns and produce natural sounding speech. Varying the prosody is another level of motor planning skill and often needs to be taught in apraxia therapy.

Once the child is able to produce a word, we work on varying the intonation pattern.  We have the child produce the word with various pitch and loudness levels.

Children love to play!

So what better way to engage them in motor speech practice then to let them play!!

In Apraxia therapy, it is crucial to learn to use toys and other resources EFFECTIVELY to elicit your target words.

But not all toys are created equal. Certain toys are more impactful for Apraxia therapy, while others are best saved for language sessions.

Choosing the right toys and aligning them with the right sounds can be a time-consuming struggle! So that’s why I created the Toys and Tools in Apraxia course.

What’s included:

* Gain entry to a comprehensive power word resource featuring a collection of my top toys and resources, organized by sound and commonly targeted words.

* The resource helps you choose power words for all the vowels which we frequently work on in apraxia therapy. Of course, consonants are included too!

* Watch over 20 video demonstrations to witness therapy techniques firsthand.

* Bonus videos are posted regularly in the Facebook group and on the course portal.
