For the 8th consecutive summer, the HSS Penny Doerge Adaptive Academy (PDAA) teamed up with Skudin Surf to host an unforgettable day of adaptive surfing for our pediatric patients and their families in Long Beach, NY!

The PDAA organizes local, regional, and national adaptive programs for kids and teens facing a range of disabilities. These events help participants discover new skills and interests, reinforce therapy goals, and connect with peers in a fun, supportive environment.

From catching their first wave to sharing laughs on the sand, our young surfers showed incredible courage and joy. Huge thanks to our dedicated staff, volunteers, and the amazing Skudin Surf team for making this day so meaningful.

Dr. Austin stresses that we are long overdue for a shift to a proactive model of perinatal care—care that supports women before, during, and after pregnancy—and integrates musculoskeletal medicine, physical therapy, and nutrition.

"Pelvic floor and core-strengthening exercises can significantly reduce the risk of wide-ranging complications."

According to Matthew T. Drake, MD, PhD, Chief of the Endocrinology and Metabolic Bone Disease Services at HSS, calcium intake has steadily declined over the years. Americans are spending more time indoors, sitting at desks, getting less vitamin D, and doing fewer weight-bearing activities. All of this contributes to an overlooked but growing crisis: our bones are becoming weaker, at an earlier age, and in greater numbers than most people realize.

Dr. Drake discusses the recent uptick in milk consumption, the importance of bone health, and what we can do to help preserve it.
