The episode of the Huberman Lab podcast out now is all about the science of willpower and how to increase it.
-
One thing the psychology and neuroscience research makes very clear is that increasing the brain centers controlling willpower requires that we do things that *we really don’t want to do*. It is not simply a matter of doing hard things.
-
For instance, if you love a certain form of exercise or other activity, even if that workout is hard, it’s not going to build willpower. To increase willpower you have to engage in things that you dislike, or that create an internal sense of anxiety and friction. Obviously, you don’t want to do anything that psychologically or physically damaging (!) but it’s important to understand this aspect of willpower if your goal is to increase it.
-
The good news is that the single brain hub controls willpower so if you increase it in one context, that capacity can carryover to other situations too. It’s a resource.
-
All the science and specific protocols are covered in the episode. You can find it (in all formats) at hubermanlab.com. It is timestamped so that you can navigate easily to the topics most of interest to you.
-
Meanwhile, please put any questions you have in the comments section below this post, and as always, thank you for your interest in science!
