Celebrating the land that gave birth to us

On this beautiful day we are honoring our home, our people and all the ways our land continues to give to us ✨

Sons and daughters of St. Lucia,

Love the land that gave us birth,

Land of beaches, hills and valleys,

Fairest isle of all the earth.

Wheresoever you may roam,

Love, oh love your island home.

Gone the times when nations battled

For this 'Helen of the West,

Gone the days when strife and discord

Dimmed her children's toil and rest.

Dawns at last a brighter day,

Stretches out a glad new way.

May the good Lord bless our island,

Guard her sons from woe and harm!

May our people live united,

Strong in soul and strong in arm!

Justice, Truth and Charity,

Our ideal for ever be!

🇱🇨National Day 🇱🇨

The Truth About Eating During Labor!

One the most common questions we get asked as doulas is “Can I eat while I’m in labor?”, the short answer is yes!

Studies have shown that eating during labor does not cause harm to the pregnant person or baby. Labor is an energy consuming process and it is important to replenish your energy with nutritious foods during this process.

But, where does this recommendation and, for some hospitals, policy that pregnant people should not eat during labor come From? We got you covered with a quick history lesson.

Here’s a useful tool you can use to make informed and intuitive decisions before, during, and after birth!

BRAIN is an acronym that helps us ask 5 important questions: 1. What are the benefits? 2. What are the risks? 3. Are there any alternatives? 4. What is my intuition/gut telling me? 5. What happens if we do nothing now and wait?

Although simple, this is a helpful tool that you can use in both your prenatal visits and during labor with your care provider and birth team when they’re suggesting or considering forms of intervention! During all parts of the birthing process we encourage you to consider BRAIN to make informed decisions!

Are there other tools you use to make informed decisions during the birthing process? Let us know if the comments below ✨

Today we’re talking about contractions!

The first thing to remember is that birth is NOT an emergency (s/o to for this continued reminder). Birth is a process and that process is marked by contractions.

How far apart contractions are lets the birthing person and their support team know how close they are to the moment of transition. Not only that but, If your plan is to birth in a hospital, knowing how far apart your contractions are is the key to knowing when it is time to go to the hospital.

Being aware of how far apart your contractions are can seem like a big task, but we promise it is not. There are many apps you can download that will help you and your birth team time your contractions. In the graphic above we highlighted out top three!

Have other contraction timer apps you like? Let us know in the comments below ✨
