Appleman Nutrition

Appleman Nutrition Our experienced team will help you improve your relationship with food and become the healthiest you

Every person deserves to live in a strong, healthy and stable body. The foundation for achieving this goal rests entirely on developing a sound relationship with food. Using a non-diet approach we emphasize the importance of incorporating ALL foods into the diet in balance and moderation and without guilt or preoccupation. Our approach is client centered and we work with each individual or family in a non-threatening and non-judgmental way to increase their knowledge and encourage lasting dietary and lifestyle shifts. Our clients are guided and empowered to listen to their bodies’ signals of hunger and fullness and to respond to these authentic cues as a means of developing a sense of trust in their bodies. We emphasize principles of mindful, intuitive eating while incorporating scientific data from current nutrition and medical research. We consider it a privilege to serve as our clients partners and guides in creating meaningful and stable changes.

The adolescent growth spurt typically begins between ages 10-14 for girls and 12-16 for boys, though timing varies considerably among individuals. During this period, teenagers can grow 3-5 inches in height and gain 15-20 pounds in a single year. This rapid physical development requires significant nutritional support, which explains why your once-moderate eater may suddenly seem like they have a bottomless pit for a stomach.

When we talk about balanced eating with our clients, we are not referring to a system of accounting or perfect mathematics where every single meal hits exact nutritional targets in terms of grams and ounces. Instead, balanced eating is about including a variety of foods that work together to provide your body with sustained energy, essential nutrients, and genuine satisfaction.

GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1, which is a hormone your body naturally produces in your intestines when you eat. Think of it as one of your body's built-in appetite and blood sugar regulators. When you eat, GLP-1 is released and does several important things: it tells your brain you're getting full, slows down how quickly food leaves your stomach, regulates appetite, and helps your pancreas release the right amount of insulin to manage your blood sugar.

Your body weight can fluctuate throughout the day and week for a host of reasons:. Hormonal changes, increased sodium intake, hydration status, bowel regularity, or even a particularly intense workout can cause the scale to shift upward temporarily. Meanwhile, you might be building lean muscle, improving your cardiovascular health, stabilizing your blood sugar, and feeling more energetic than you have in years.

Let's talk about what's actually happening during this incredible period of growth. Your baby's development during these first 1000 days is nothing short of amazing. We're talking about rapid brain development, with physical growth that sees most babies triple their birth weight by their first birthday. But here's what's really fascinating: during this time, your child's body is essentially getting programmed for life, influencing everything from immune system strength to their future health patterns.

We've touched on orthorexia on our blog before. Orthorexia is an informal term for a condition where a person is obsessed with the idea of “healthy eating” to such a degree that they allow it to control their behaviors. They may:

- Refuse to eat food they deem “unclean” or “unhealthy,” even when hungry.
- Spend considerable social or professional time worrying about their meals.
- Overestimate the effects of consuming “unhealthy” food.
- Believe unfounded theories, myths, and alternative theories about eating foods they consider to be “bad” or “unhealthy.”
- Allow their life to be consumed by and affected by the desire for healthy food.

These individuals have a relationship with food that is damaging psychologically, and that psychological relationship with food affects them socially, emotionally – even professionally. Recently, there was an excellent article on Huffington Post about this very topic. It's certainly worth a read, and if you'd like to learn more or get nutritionist support for orthorexia, contact our team at Appleman Nutrition today.
