Dawn Ippoliti Art Therapy

Dawn Ippoliti Art Therapy I offer art therapy and psychotherapy for individuals, families, and groups in NYC and Central New Jersey. However creating art is always your choice.

Art therapy is a unique form of therapy that integrates the creative process for emotional health and healing. I am a licensed, board certified, art therapist and registered with the American Art Therapy Association. I received my Masters from New York University, which provided me with a strong psychodynamic foundation, as a clinician. However I am committed to expanding my knowledge with continuous postgraduate courses, trainings, research, and workshops. Therefore my approach has become more holistic, drawing on various theoretical philosophies such as, cognitive behavioral therapy, trauma focused therapy, relational therapy, and systemic therapy. I am passionate about living life in the present moment and deeply value mindfulness as an accessible internal resource to help alleviate stress and anxiety. Over the past fifteen years I have worked in a variety of clinical settings and institutions, providing art therapy and mental health services to children and families in crisis. Currently, I work as the program supervisor for New York University Art Therapy in the Schools Program providing supervision and trainings to school art therapist and their interns. Additionally, I have continued to maintain a private practice over the past seven years in downtown Manhattan where I work with adolescents and adults. I believe it is my comprehensive trainings in both psychotherapy and art therapy, which brings diverse elements to my sessions and has helped to foster positive change in the lives of those who have given me the opportunity to work with them. Most recently I have expanded my private practice to further service the people of Millburn, New Jersey and the surrounding communities. Many of the people I see are looking for alternatives to traditional talk therapy. No artistic skill or ability is needed to participate in art therapy. Our focus is more about the process of creating and finding a place to freely explore both artistically and verbally. If you prefer verbal means of expression, I will always welcome the direction you choose and will provide a highly personalized treatment plan that best suits your individual needs. When external situations bring you down. It can be helpful to maintain perspective about what’s most important. Like the dandelion who can see what matters most is not how others others see us but how we see ourselves.

When we can center our focus internally like this, we gain access to deepening our own growth.

Can you be inspired by the dandelion and shift your focus internally? What things do you value? Perhaps maybe you can even take your next action in a valued direction? Thank you for this beautiful image.

Letting go of control can be difficult for many reasons. Whether it’s fear of not getting what you want or other complex emotions getting in your way, the struggle is real. People often tell me, they feel pressured to make huge or drastic changes in attempts to regain this control. In these grand gestures people tend to lose site of the present moment. If we can stay present we can practice letting go in smaller more manageable ways—micro shifts. Perhaps these micro shift can be to our attention, our action, or our perspective. How can you make a micro shift to practice letting go in your next moment?

I remembered feeling so “happy“ in that moment surrounded by those beautiful hydrangeas. Today in this moment I feel differently. I’m reminded feelings are our reactions—fluid and transient. They will change again and again and again. This perspective deepens my appreciation for this process and enables me to practice holding space for all my emotions regardless of whether my experience is positive or negative. How will you engage in your next moment? , , ,

When I am aware and present I get to choose how I respond instead of letting my thoughts and feelings dictate my actions. This was a damp and rainy day at the beach instead of getting wrapped up in negative thinking about what it was or wasn’t I choose to shift my focus and attention to the present. It was in that moment where I found these beautiful dewy daisies right in front of my eyes.

This sidewalk chalk art done by my 6-year-old son makes me think we have to remember things are not always as they seem or appear and often there are many layers we cannot see too. Much like the grit and grains in the hard asphalt that lay underneath the beauty of the soft chalk pastels. Sometimes people stay in their own subtle outer layers because it’s comfortable and rosy, but growth has layers too. The rain will eventually come to wash away the chalk leaving the dark rough asphalt exposed. It is actually here, in these moments of opening and vulnerability where people can truly begin to experience the depth below and heal; perhaps those hardened darker parts they’ve kept hidden beneath the images of their own soft chalk pastels.
