How did I learn about endurance, power generation and fatigue suppression for athletes?For over 9 years I drove up and fown the east coast, setting up tents at every Gran Fondo event and literally de-briefed the cyclists.How did I get them to divulge their knowledge?After each 100+ mile event, I would offer each cyclist a seat in reclining chair with an ice cold beverage, multiple high speec fans, and Normatec compression boots.I had their attention for 20-30 mintues which gave me enough time to inquire about their training, fueling, and mis-steps.You can learn from a book and YouTube…-BUT-Talking with thousands of endurance athletes provides wisdom from thousands of experiences!The top finishers were also the cyclists that trained a majority of their time in Zone 2 (fat burning zone) which was determined by a VO2 Max Test.Unlike the finishers that struggled which trained with much less precision and “guessed” their Zone 2.Lack of precision and understanding of how and when the body uses fat and carbohydrates can be the the difference between finishing on the podium and struggling to even finish. Are you trying to lose body fat by running or cycling with little to no success?

In my 38ys of experience it’s usually due to:

1. Taking in more calories than you are using

Or

2. Your training at to high of an intensity which burns sugar not fat.

If your goal is to lose body fat than you should at least know:

1. Current percent body fat
2. Total fat mass
3. Total skeletal muscle mass
4. Accurate heart rate zone for your body/physiology

The first 3 can be obtained from a body composition device such as InBody.

Your personalized fat burning heart rate zone (zone 2) can only be accurately calculated by having a VO2 Max test performed.

A VO2 Max test tells your precisely at what heart rate/intensity you need to maintain, while exercising, to burn fat.

If your exercising too hard, you have the potential to lose skeletal muscle and not fat.

Yes, you will be lighter on the scale.

Yes, your clothes may fit better.

Do I believe VO2 max testing should be a mandatory test across your lifespan?

Yes!

It’s more than just a tool to measure fitness.

It’s an assessment to measure metabolic health, efficiency, cardiorespiratory and long-term health.

But the 🔑 is what to do with the information?

Are your “ok” with a low or average VO2 Max Score?🤨

It may work for you now, but you must have an above average/excellent score to be independent and lead a disease free life in your 50’s and on!
