What do Black families really need?
It’s not just access. It’s respect. It’s safety. It’s support that sees them, hears them, and listens to them.

When I speak to rooms full of providers, doulas, and decision-makers, I remind them that birth is more than clinical--it’s spiritual, emotional, and ancestral.

Let’s shift from awareness to action. Our lives depend on it.

"As a society, our goal should be 0 preventable deaths from pregnancy and pregnancy related causes by the year 2030. If it's good enough for climate change and it's good enough for world hunger, why is it not good enough for mamas? And so if you believe that that's what mothers deserve, support the birthFUND. Support 4Kira4Moms. And if not, grab a seat, get some popcorn, and watch us change the world." - Charles Johnson, Founder, 4Kira4Moms

Postpartum psychosis is a rare but serious mental health condition that can occur in the weeks following childbirth. It's crucial to understand that it's a medical emergency and requires immediate attention and treatment.

🤰🏾 Black women are two to three times more likely to experience postpartum psychosis compared to women of other racial or ethnic backgrounds.

Despite the increased risk, Black women often face barriers to accessing timely and culturally competent mental health care, leading to disparities in diagnosis and treatment.

🚨 If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, confusion, extreme mood swings, or thoughts of harming yourself or your baby, please seek help right away. Postpartum psychosis is treatable, and early intervention can make all the difference in recovery--trust me, I know.

💖 Remember, you're not alone. There is help available, and it's okay to reach out for support.

It's World Maternal Mental Health Day--today, we stand in solidarity with mothers around the world, shining a light on maternal mental health. Did you know:

🤰🏽 Maternal mental health disorders affect approximately 1 in 5 women worldwide, but studies show that mothers of color are disproportionately affected.

👩🏾‍⚕️ Black and Indigenous women are two to three times more likely to experience severe maternal morbidity (complications) compared to white women, highlighting systemic disparities in healthcare access and quality.

😔 Postpartum depression rates among Black and Latina mothers are significantly higher than those of white mothers, yet we are less likely to receive adequate support and treatment.

On (and every day), is committed to amplifying the voices of Black parents, advocating for equitable access to mental health resources, and fostering a community of support and understanding. With resources like and Perinatal Mental Health Alliance for People of Color, we're learning how to help you get the support you need.

As we end , it's imperative to reflect on the disparities in maternal health outcomes faced by Black mothers and take action to drive meaningful change.

1️⃣ Raise Awareness: Education is key. By increasing awareness about the factors contributing to these disparities, we can spark conversations and mobilize support for solutions. Follow organizations like amd to learn more.

2️⃣ Address Implicit Bias: Healthcare providers must undergo training to recognize and address implicit bias, ensuring equitable care for all mothers.

3️⃣ Advocate for Policy Change: We must advocate for policies that address social determinants of health, expand access to quality prenatal and postpartum care, and invest in community-based solutions.

4️⃣ Support Black-led Initiatives: Amplify the voices of Black leaders and organizations working to improve maternal health outcomes within their communities.

Together, let's commit to creating a future where every mother receives the care and support she deserves.

Black Maternal Health Week provides an opportunity for us to raise awareness and take action to improve the health and well-being of Black mothers and birthing people. From April 11-17, we recognize the importance of addressing the disparities in maternal health outcomes for Black families.

I kicked off by celebrating , which recognizes the work of Black doulas and promotes positive birth experiences and better outcomes for Black families. Later that evening, I had the honor of joining an esteemed panel at the Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated forum, "Reimagining Birth."

As Dr. Marie P Wilson DNP, APRN, WHNP RNC-MNN, Andrea Hamilton, PhD, MHA, Ruby Rhoden and I continue to raise awareness, advocate for change, and ensure equitable access to quality healthcare, we'd love for you to contribute your voice.

Let's work together to dismantle systemic barriers, promote culturally competent care, and empower Black mothers to thrive throughout their pregnancy and childbirth journey.

Zurzuvae, the first pill for postpartum depression approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration became available by prescription in December-- but experts worry that it won't be accessible for those who need it most.

Most antidepressants are effective in six to eight weeks, but daily doses of Zurzuvae take only two. However, costs for the two-week course are high, at almost $16,000.

Experts and advocates are urging state Medicaid agencies to make sure Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and low-income patients, who are disproportionately affected by postpartum depression, have access to Zurzuvae. Up to half of maternal mental health diagnoses are missed, and just over 20% of diagnosed patients undergo treatment. While there are many factors involved, lack of adequate insurance and high costs are major barriers to care.

“The issue is not just that we should be covering these medications, but that there needs to be an attention to the increasing costs of these medications and the need to increase overall coverage and funding of the cost for serving these communities." - Dr. Ian Bennett

Recent CDC statistics revealed an increase in infant mortality – for the first time in over two decades. To address the maternal and infant mortality crisis, Governor Hochul introduced new policies and legislation to expand access to high-quality prenatal care, reduce costs for parents and families, fight postpartum depression and support infants in the first months of their lives.
“Make no mistake: we are facing a maternal and infant mortality crisis,” Governor Hochul said. “As New York’s first mom governor, this is personal to me. We are committed to tackling this crisis head-on with policies that lift up parents and children throughout the State of New York.”
