Mindful Mami - Birth & Body

Mindful Mami - Birth & Body A self-proclaimed geek, Jessica Smiley has always been in awe of nature and the biology of the human body.

This inspires her ever growing quest to foster wellness within herself and community at large. Jess discovered her affinity for all things related to birth and nurturing during her own pregnancy. When friends, family, and even friends of friends began coming to her for information and support in their birth, baby-wearing and nursing journeys, a passion and call to serve was realized. As a women of color herself, Jess prioritizes offering and being that platform to address the disparities in birth and infant care and outcomes for people of color. Mindful Mami | Birth & Body is the manifestation of Jess' commitments to inclusiveness, respecting the intelligence of human design, evidence based information, and upholding client birth choices. We use informed choices and mindfulness as tools for self empowerment during the childbearing year and beyond.

It turns out that having s*x with warm socks on CAN increase satisfaction😈 -- the extra warmth🔥 increases circulation🌊, therefore boosting your orgasm-ability 🤩 (& chances of conceiving).
❄️: Cold makes wombs tense and contract. Traditional wisdom advises us to keep the womb WARM, especially during menstruation (*moon time*), and postpartum. Cold drinks like smoothies or iced water, -- especially the PMS fave: 🍨ice cream🍦 -- can correlate to an increase in painful cramping (it can be immediate or hours later). I’ve noticed this in myself, now I typically avoid all cold things when I’m ovulating or bleeding 🤷‍♀️. It took me years to make that connection, & later discovered there was plenty of literature to back this claim (++ my own grandma, with all her secret nuggets of healing wisdom✨).
Always drinking and eating cold things, particularly during the latter half of your cycle can contribute to dysmenorrhea, issues TTC, etc. If you’re naturally always very cold☃️ + have challenges with your reproductive system😩, OR on the first day or so of bleeding your blood comes out very dark🧐...it might be worth a shot to focus on heating up, internally and externally❣️.
Not only does cold shock the womb, but it also makes digestion HARDER at a time when our body is already working so hard and all parts can use more rest. Our best bet is to GO EASY on our digestive tract, feeding ourselves warm, nourishing, easily digestible foods🍠🍜🍵.
🔥: If you experience irregular, painful periods, are pregnant, trying to conceive, healing from childbearing (including miscarriage and abortion), or looking to soothe and nourish your womb ( 💡good idea!) try cutting back on iced beverages, incorporate some HEATING elements: keep your body warm, especially your FEET, head, back and belly areas (fuzzy socks + slippers plz🙌🏽), selfie or partner massage with warm oil 💋 , a hot shower or 🛁, & sip on hot tea 🍵 with ingredients that warm you from the inside out — think: TURMERIC. CINAMMOM. GINGER. ORANGE PEEL. CARDAMOM. 😍♥️🔴🌹✨.

A lot of people ask me what started me on a more intentional path towards wellness + spirituality...for years I had the worst experiences with my menstrual cycle- heavy, painful(!) and much too long. It was disruptive to all areas of my life & I received no help from doctors I went to, outside of prescriptions of birth control, which I tried until eventually it all blew up on me, + was just too obvious that it was a band aid, making the original problem worse🤯. I heard them say things to me that I KNEW was untrue, not supportive to real healing (I continue to witness this as a birth worker🤦🏽‍♀️🤯, an unfortunate routine). So I started waking up, again. I was aggressive in my dedication to change. Healing my womb, healing my life. >>> 🚨 SPOILER ALERT : it worked! I’ve had a healthy, regular cycle for years now😎🙌🏽... a time I typically look forward to, for deeper insights + to cleanse, reflect and renew myself 🌊🌹🔥.
I spend a lot of time in sessions w womxn, sharing ways to support me**es cycles, tune in to the strength of their wombs, + nurture themselves — whether they are working with PCOS, PMS/irritability, endometriosis, fibroids, hormonal birth control, coming off birth control, TTC, postpartum (including abortion and miscarriage), or seeking non-invasive, non-hormonal/non-invasive birth control methods.
Our wombs + cycles are not meant to be dreadful experiences! It’s the body’s smoke signal, saying PLS SEE ME, Listen to me, Learn & Care for me, Something has to change! We tend to be so deeply miseducated on how to honor and care for our reproductive system,+ disconnected from what our NEEDS are.
F**k a stigma...indigenous cultures understood, therefore had REVERENCE...including rites of passage, and rituals to make space for and HONOR this time. The concept that we should not talk about these experiences publicly, that it’s normal to continue to ENDURE irregular and painful periods all while going on with life + work/school as usual and PRETENDING nothing is wrong, is colonized bu****it. I’ll be talking about our menstrual cycle health & moontime rituals all March. Lmk if there’s any specific thing you’d like for me to address XOXO 😘🌊🌺

Parenting is an extreme sport! Come together to EXHALE...& laugh at it all. .
It’s story time at this Sunday + We will practice “Well Wishes”, a practice inspired by Dr. Becky Bailey (expert in childhood education & developmental psychology, Dr. Bailey’s specialty is conscious discipline). We’ve put our own spin on the practice to be a good model for setting intentions with children (and ourselves), practicing listening, empathy, + celebrating ourselves and each other 🌈🎉.
We’ll get a chance to chat, chill, loosen up, shake it out, and hit the refresh button.

Who told my child that it was Valentines Day yesterday?
Many times throughout the day he spontaneously turned to me to express how grateful he is for me! He is three --
"Wow Mommy you're so sweet, and thoughtful. You work hard, and you do all these things for me. And I really like my things and my food and the things you show me. It makes me happy, so I really appreciate you. It's so sweetful of you." Yes this was his words, verbatim. And it happened many times throughout the day, and into this morning, different words but the same point. It's beyond what I thought I could receive in words from such a little one. Fueled with inspiration to continue to be more creative and present in my Motherhood, even in the most 'mundane' moments
Great are the challenges. Endless are the rewards 💪🏽⭐️
