Last postpartum visit of 2020. Love seeing my client’s baby do so well and thrive. I honor the job we do as birth workers and so grateful to support families even during these different times. ✨

In time for the holidays, we are launching our first crowdfunding effort, through GoFundMe, to offer free doula services to Hispanic folks in need.

Why is this so important? Mistreatment during childbirth is pervasive for people who don’t speak English and/or are BIPOC. Laboring people from our communities are routinely ignored, patronized, and denied the autonomy to make medical decisions about their bodies and their babies. And maternal mortality among Hispanic pregnant people in NYC is three times higher than among white pregnant people*

By contributing to this campaign, you will be directly supporting our efforts to provide no-cost doula services to Hispanic communities in need, and you will be helping to expand the community of professional, Spanish-speaking BIPOC doulas in New York.

If a doctor is asking you to do something, you have the right to informed consent (or to say no). In order to have true informed consent, you have to have all of this information.

Do your doctors give you true informed consent?

Read below!

・・・
ShaAsia Washington was taken from this world too early due to neglectful care reportedly at Woodhull Hospital in Brooklyn. She died during a cesarean section birthing her daughter Khloe ShaAsia Anne Lopez, at only 26 years old.

We are birth workers because Black women like her deserve better care. We are birth workers because the system that killed her needs to be turned inside out. We are birth workers because the facility and providers that killed her need to be held accountable. We are birth workers because birthing people deserve to be listened to. We do the work to honor legacies like ShaAsia’s. And there’s lots of work to be done.

Link to support her family is in our bio.

WHY WE USE GENDER-NEUTRAL LANGUAGE. 💡☁️

In today’s birth world landscape, we know that women, trans men and nonbinary folks all may choose to give birth, so gendered terms to describe pregnant people are not always accurate. And throughout your work as a doula in the field, misgendering your client has the potential to harm and disregard their identity.

At DTI, we teach and understand that a doula’s role is to affirm all pregnant people, and gender-neutral language is the first place to start.
