We’re still feeling inspired after attending today’s Senior Blue Book Network Meeting for Essex-Hudson-Union!

Our Founder, Holly Strelzik, shared more about what we do at Center for the Heart — from grief support and caregiver wellness circles to end-of-life doula care. At the heart of it all is our commitment to helping families navigate transitions with compassion and clarity.

Huge thanks to Brian Eckert and Senior Blue Book for the warm welcome and to Arden Courts of West Orange for hosting such a meaningful network gathering.

💬 Want to learn more about how we support families through loss, legacy, and caregiving? We’d love to connect. https://www.centerfortheheart.org/

The Center for the Heart is taking intentional time to reflect on how we can more meaningfully support and connect those who are grieving.

As part of this process, we’ve made the decision to postpone Legacy Walk 2025, our annual gathering to honor and remember loved ones we've lost.

💜 A new date will be announced soon. We're committed to creating a space that fosters healing, remembrance, and community in a way that truly reflects your needs.

Thank you for your patience, and for walking with us—then, now, and when we gather again.

We’re creating a remembrance playlist for our upcoming walk — a collection of songs that hold meaning, memory, and love for those we’ve lost. 💜

If there’s a song that reminds you of someone special — one that brings their memory close — we’d be honored to include it.

Please share your song in the comments or send us a message. Let’s honor them through music, together. 🎶

The "Faces" of grief

We often picture grief as tears and heartbreak—but it can also look like numbness, rage, fatigue, or even laughter. These are all natural responses to loss. However your grief is showing up today, know that you're not broken—and you don’t have to judge yourself for it 💜

We had such a meaningful visit with the incredible team at Jewish Family Service of Central New Jersey where our founder, Holly Strelzik, had the chance to speak with their nursing and counseling staff about end-of-life care and grief support.

So grateful for the chance to share the heart behind our work and connect with others who are doing such important work in their own community. 💛

Today we pause to remember those who gave everything—and to reflect on the quiet spaces their absence leaves behind. Memorial Day invites us to not only honor the fallen, but to hold compassion for the grief carried by loved ones left behind. Let us be the kind of friends who speak, show up, and remember together. Wishing you a day of peace, presence, and heartfelt connection 💜

  A wonderful tribute.

A wonderful tribute.

When an old man died in the geriatric ward of a nursing home in an Australian country town, it was believed that he had nothing left of any value.
Later, when the nurses were going through his meager possessions, They found this poem. Its quality and content so impressed the staff that copies were made and distributed to every nurse in the hospital.

One nurse took her copy to Melbourne. The old man's sole bequest to posterity has since appeared in the Christmas editions of magazines around the country and appearing in mags for Mental Health. A slide presentation has also been made based on his simple, but eloquent, poem.

And this old man, with nothing left to give to the world, is now the author of this 'anonymous' poem winging across the Internet.

Cranky Old Man

What do you see nurses? . . .. . .What do you see?
What are you thinking .. . when you're looking at me?
A cranky old man, . . . . . .not very wise,
Uncertain of habit .. . . . . . . .. with faraway eyes?
Who dribbles his food .. . ... . . and makes no reply.
When you say in a loud voice . .'I do wish you'd try!'
Who seems not to notice . . .the things that you do.
And forever is losing . . . . . .. . . A sock or shoe?
Who, resisting or not . . . ... lets you do as you will,
With bathing and feeding . . . .The long day to fill?
Is that what you're thinking?. .Is that what you see?
Then open your eyes, nurse .you're not looking at me.
I'll tell you who I am . . . . .. As I sit here so still,
As I do at your bidding, .. . . . as I eat at your will.
I'm a small child of Ten . .with a father and mother,
Brothers and sisters .. . . .. . who love one another
A young boy of Sixteen . . . .. with wings on his feet
Dreaming that soon now . . .. . . a lover he'll meet.
A groom soon at Twenty . . . ..my heart gives a leap.
Remembering, the vows .. .. .that I promised to keep.
At Twenty-Five, now . . . . .I have young of my own.
Who need me to guide . . . And a secure happy home.
A man of Thirty . .. . . . . My young now grown fast,
Bound to each other . . .. With ties that should last.
At Forty, my young sons .. .have grown and are gone,
But my woman is beside me . . to see I don't mourn.
At Fifty, once more, .. ...Babies play 'round my knee,
Again, we know children . . . . My loved one and me.
Dark days are upon me . . . . My wife is now dead.
I look at the future ... . . . . I shudder with dread.
For my young are all rearing .. . . young of their own.
And I think of the years . . . And the love that I've known.
I'm now an old man . . . . . . .. and nature is cruel.
It's jest to make old age . . . . . . . look like a fool.
The body, it crumbles .. .. . grace and vigour, depart.
There is now a stone . . . where I once had a heart.
But inside this old carcass . A young man still dwells,
And now and again . . . . . my battered heart swells
I remember the joys . . . . .. . I remember the pain.
And I'm loving and living . . . . . . . life over again.
I think of the years, all too few . . .. gone too fast.
And accept the stark fact . . . that nothing can last.
So open your eyes, people .. . . . .. . . open and see.
Not a cranky old man .
Look closer . . . . see .. .. . .. .... . ME!!

Remember this poem when you next meet an older person who you might brush aside without looking at the young soul within. We will all, one day, be there, too!

Many people don’t realize just how expansive and vital the role of an End-of-Life Doula can be. From emotional and spiritual support to practical services like respite care and home funeral guidance, this work touches every part of the dying process. That’s why we’re raising awareness—so that more people receive the compassionate presence and support they deserve at the end of life 💜

Yesterday marked the birthday of Florence Nightingale, born May 12, 1820 — a pioneer of modern nursing and a tireless advocate for compassionate, evidence-based care. Her legacy lives on in every act of service that places dignity, presence, and humanity at the center of healing.

At Center for the Heart, we see her spirit reflected in the quiet, powerful work of caregivers — those who tend to the vulnerable, support the dying, and hold space for grief and love every day. Whether you're caring for an aging parent, sitting vigil with someone at the end of life, or simply showing up with kindness, your work matters.

Caregiving is often invisible — but it is never unimportant. It is noble, essential, and deeply human.

💜 Here's to the everyday heroes. You are seen. You are honored.
