A new study published in Child Development by Mount Sinai researchers offers insights into the complexity of multiple environmental exposures during pregnancy. The August 2023 study examines the joint association of prenatal exposures to a metal mixture and mother’s stress during pregnancy and the potential effects in child behavior. We must understand the health impacts of the stressors in our lives (our social environment) as well as toxic materials (our physical environment). This research offers insights into the complex interactions of many exposures, both chemical and non-chemical that occur in utero and opportunities to counsel pregnant women on ways to counteract the toxicity of stress and metal mixtures. Dr. Francheska Merced-Nieves, the lead researcher on the study, highlights the importance of , , and supports for parents to reduce stress both in and the postnatal period.
