We all face uncomfortable conversations, conversations we’d do anything to avoid. It could be with a boss, a parent, a sibling, or a spouse. It could be anybody. 🥺 😕
I was in that situation a few days ago.
In the past, I would steel myself against “the impending attack” hoping it either wouldn’t happen or wouldn’t be so bad.
This time, as I saw the conversation looming on the horizon (and make no mistake I saw it coming), I decided I'd do something different. 💪💪
Having practiced yoga for over twenty years, 🧘♀️ and teaching it for over sixteen, I knew staying present would allow me the flexibility to more elegantly navigate the situation, like a tree in the forest. If it’s flexible it can withstand the storm. If not, if it’s rigid, it will break.
So, before the conversation:
1. I sat quietly, eyes closed, breathing slowly and deeply. That grounded me in the present. Breathing deeply breathing also activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which is the relaxation response in the body.
2. I did a few yoga poses. Stretching alleviates tension in the body/mind. I did forward bending poses. These are “poses of surrender,” which also helped to ground me.
3. I diffused essential oils. I picked the one that I know is specifically good for grounding.
These three things took me a maximum of ten minutes and they helped me to navigate that very difficult conversation (and it was difficult!!!!). ✊ 🤛 🤛 🙌
