Happy Different Colored Eyes Day!

Did you know the medical term for having two different colored eyes is heterochromia? It can be genetic, present from birth, or acquired due to injury, inflammation, or certain medical conditions.

There are three main types:
Complete heterochromia: each eye is a completely different color
Sectoral heterochromia: a segment of one eye is a different color
Central heterochromia: rings of different colors radiate from the pupil

At the University Eye Center, we celebrate the beauty and science behind unique eyes. If you notice changes in your eye color, it could be more than just a cool feature, it might be a sign of an underlying condition. Our experts are here to help keep your vision clear and your eyes healthy.

Fireworks & Eyes Don’t Mix

💥 Always wear ANSI-approved protective eyewear when handling or near fireworks — ordinary glasses do not provide adequate protection.

💥 Never allow children to handle fireworks or sparklers; their delicate eyes are especially vulnerable to burns and trauma.

💥Maintain a safe distance: at least 25 feet from ground-based fireworks and over 100 feet from aerial displays to avoid accidental injuries.

💥 Light fireworks one at a time and step back immediately to reduce the risk of unexpected explosions and flying debris.

💥 If an eye injury occurs, avoid rubbing or applying pressure. Cover the eye with a rigid shield and seek immediate medical attention from an eye care professional.

Some eye injuries may not be immediately obvious. Schedule a comprehensive eye exam if you experience any trauma.
