The Basics of the Human Cell

Cells are the building blocks of life and the distribution centers of the body.

Plasma Membrane: Separates the cell from neighbors and prevents water-based substances from entering the cell.

Nucleus: The cell's headquarters—contains the majority of the cell's DNA and tells the cell to grow, divide, or die.

Cytoplasm: The interior of the cell is 80% water - many cell reactions occur here.

Cytoskeleton: The scaffolding of the cell.

Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER): Synthesizes, folds, modifies, and transports proteins.

Golgi Apparatus: Follows ER processing—this is the post office of the cell because items are packaged and labeled.

Mitochondria: The power plant of the cell and the main source of energy (ATP)—the mitochondria helps turn energy from the food and nutrition we get into energy the cell can use.

Ribosomes: These live in the nucleus and transcribe DNA into RNA.

Lysosomes: The garbage disposals of the cell—lysosomes break down and digest old cell parts.
