Observing is one of DBT’s mindfulness WHAT Skills. This skill involves paying attention to both internal experiences (thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations) and external events without getting caught up in judgments or evaluations. If you’re ‘suddenly’ furious and crying, is it perhaps because you were unmindful of hunger? (Please tell us we’re not the only ones?!) Read on for practice exercises for observing, and listen to for more!

Do you ever find yourself worrying about the future? Lamenting the past? Operating on autopilot as you head to work, do the dishes, or even interact with family, friends, and colleagues? DBT has two core sets of mindfulness skills: "WHAT" skills and "HOW" skills. Who do you depend on? If this question is challenging to answer, just focus on thinking back to yesterday - who did you depend on yesterday? Your local postal worker to ship an important package? A colleague to offer coverage? A loved one to troubleshoot a complex decision? Dependency is NOT a bad word! In fact, as referenced in “Attached,” “the key to developing healthy independence is actually cultivating healthy dependence on others.”

Let’s talk about the the history of attachment theory! In the 1950s, Bowlby proposed that early relationships with caregivers shape our emotional and social development. Building upon Bowlby's work, psychologist Mary Ainsworth conducted the groundbreaking "Strange Situation" experiment. This study identified three primary attachment styles: secure, anxious-ambivalent, and avoidant. Since then, attachment theory has expanded, shedding light on adult relationships and mental health. Researchers have explored the impact of attachment on romantic partnerships, friendships, and even the workplace.
