Edith Marie Ravenell, the “baby” of nine children born to the late Deacon Mayo Wallace and Deaconess Katie Bell Henderson Ravenell, was born on June 1, 1947 in Dorchester County. On Sunday night, April 30, 2023, as she was surrounded by love ones,God summoned His Angel of Mercy to bring her home for eternal rest after a brief illness. At an early age she joined the St. Matthew Baptist Church in Reevesville, SouthCarolina where she worked diligently as the director of the combined choirs, founding member of the Heritage Inspirational Gospel Ensemble, past president of the program committee, member of the Pastor’s Aide Ministry, trustee serving as church treasurer and a member of the missionary society. She spearheaded the church’s Annual Bike-A-Thon. She was elated when she was chosen to replace her Mom as the church’s board member of the Lovely Hill Baptist Women’s Auxiliary. Edith was a 1965 graduate of Williams Memorial High School in St. George, South Carolina.Her careers included working as a seamstress at Carolina Girls, St. George, SouthCarolina, doing alterations at Belk in Citadel Mall and serving as the director of the Dorchester County Senior Citizens Nutrition Site, St. George, South Carolina. She was a recipient of the South Carolina State University 1890 Extension Award.She was a devoted Mom and best friend to her only birth child, Tony, but she servedas a surrogate mother to many. Edith’s jovial spirit would lift the spirits of everyone who entered her presence. She was truly one who never met a stranger. She was predeceased by siblings baby girl Rosa Mae, Louder, Willie, John Chester,and Ervin. Edith leaves to cherish many fond and wonderful memories; one son, Tony (Suzette)Ravenell of Charlotte, North Carolina; one grandson, Darius Moise of Charlotte, North Carolina; two brothers, Mayo Ravenell, Jr. of Amityville, New York and Floyd (Delores)Ravenell of St. George, South Carolina; two sisters, Katherine R. Mosley of New York, NewYork and Evelyn Washington of Summerville, South Carolina; one aunt, Henrietta Henderson West of Branchville, South Carolina; one goddaughter, Sandy Summers Felder of St. George, South Carolina and a grand host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
