SAVE THE DATE šŸŽ‰ Celebrating Community 2025

On October 21st, join the CFL family in honoring Co-Executive Director Julie Stein Brockway before her retirement (or as she would say, ā€œre-wirementā€) in December 2025.

This event will be an opportunity to celebrate Julie’s leadership over the past 43 years, including the founding of the nationally-recognized ā€œLife Linesā€ Community Arts Project (), her decades-long advocacy alongside community members for the creation of Sunset Park High School, and the growth of free, high-quality programs that today engage 8,000 youth and family members across 11 Sunset Park schools. ā˜€ļø

Mark your calendars and stay tuned for further information! Hope to see you there! šŸ—“ļø

We rallied today alongside Council Member Alexa AvilƩs, members, and our settlement house partners to push for adult literacy funding in NYC.

The city budget MUST protect immigrant families.

We need to maintain $16.5 million for Adult Literacy programs and we must restore and baseline $25 million for Promise NYC.

Last week, our beautiful PS 503/506 schoolyard was filled with information & resources for youth programs, food assistance, adult education, housing, and more. We also had food, clothing, art, books, and fun for the whole family!

We are grateful to the over 20 community partners in our Sunset Park neighborhood for spending the afternoon at our school while we highlighted the four pillars of the Community School Model: attendance, family engagement, school culture, and health and mental health.

So many connections were formed that make our school community stronger! 🐘 šŸ šŸ¤

Later 2 CFL parents, 2 third graders, a high school participant, and 2 staff members testified at the Committee Hearing on Children & Youth.

About Us

Center for Family Life, a program of SCO Family of Services, is a neighborhood-based family and social services organization with deep roots in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

Our mission is to promote positive outcomes for children, adults and families in Sunset Park through the provision of a comprehensive range of neighborhood-based family and social services. We partner with the community to provide access to resources and opportunities for personal growth and the development of interpersonal relationships that sustain and nurture families, support youth to develop into confident, capable adults and enrich the quality of life for neighborhood residents.

Sunset Park is a densely populated, low-income neighborhood with a large percentage of recent immigrants. Community residents have limited access to the resources needed to grow and thrive. Within this context, we offer a comprehensive range of programs and services that address families’ needs from every angle. These include family counseling and neighborhood-based foster care; cultural, educational and recreational programs at neighborhood public schools, adult and youth employment programs; and an emergency storefront for food and advocacy.

Poverty, inadequate educational and limited employment opportunities are a few of the enormous challenges that Sunset Park residents confront. At the Center, we witness the energy, creativity, and productivity of community residents, as well as the powerful human struggle to overcome these challenges and gain access to the resources needed to sustain a vibrant and nurturing community. The Center’s work is rooted in the daily, lived experience of this community and guided by a vision of families and social institutions evolving over time and contributing to each other’s ongoing growth. We dedicate ourselves to service because we believe that the social inequity that impacts the residents of Sunset Park is deeply unjust, and that when inequity is eliminated, human potential becomes limitless.
