One of the fun parts of my job is getting to work with all kinds of smart and motivated people, who push me to be better and to do more. Shout out to these two amazing peeps, who have helped run the clinic, teach each other, and do research together! See Figure 1 for outstanding plastic surgery resident, Dr Yufan Yan, and medical student, Ricky Paramo. Happy Friday! 😊

SO proud of my amazing sister for graduating from her general surgery residency!! ❀️πŸ’ͺπŸ‘ She took care of some of the toughest cases in inner city Philly, night after night, and somehow balanced research, married life, three cats/one dog, and matched into a sought after breast fellowship at Mass General Hospital! Love you so much πŸ₯°

Happy 🌎 Day!!! The boys and I spent the morning cleaning up a park in the neighborhood. If you are interested, most parks have Earth Day activities this weekend!

πŸ”₯ Look out for lighting in before and afters! This beautiful lady looks a million times better in the 'after' picture on the bottom, but actually did not undergo any procedure - I just used a flash! Now, I did actually do a lower eyelid blepharoplasty - swipe to see the result!

πŸ’‘ Lighting is SO key - make sure to take ur clinic photos with the same lighting each time! Most people prefer before and afters with lighting from the front and from the top.

πŸ‘ This beautiful lady was so happy to have her face back to normal! She had undergone a painful battle with thyroid eye disease, suffering from upper eyelid retraction (when the upper eyelids are too open). This caused her her eyes to burn and tear constantly and also made her so self conscious because people would stare at her. Now, her eyelids are at a normal height and her tearing/burning has resolved!β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
⏲ this surgery took about 30 min, can be done in the office or in a surgical center, while awake or sedated, and you go home the same day.β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
🩹 there is swelling and bruising for 1-2 weeks on average. you can see she still has some swelling in the after pic, which was taken about 1 week after the surgery. β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €

πŸ€“ I got new glasses! 🌈 These are my first colorful glasses since 8th grade and they make me so happy! To share the joy, I have some fun glasses facts for both eye doctors and non eye oriented folks. (some=good study tips for the ophtho oral boards!)β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €

πŸ‘οΈ you can tell if i am near or far sighted (aka myopic or hyperopic) just from this picture. What's your guess?β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
πŸ€“ For people with very high prescriptions, this frame size is borderline too big. Do you know why? β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
🧐 What are progressive lenses? β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
(glasses that allow you to both see distance and read up close - lens changes gradually without the line seen in bifocals. both progressives and bifocals are for presbyopia, an age related change that affects all of us, starting around age 40 (πŸ™Š!). The change decreases the ability to read up close without glasses and it's coming for you, so enjoy reading this IG post while you can!), 🧐🧐 With progressives, is it better to have big or little frames? β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
Answers!! β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
πŸ‘οΈ I'm near sighted or myopic. You can see that my lenses make my eyes/face smaller. On my prescription, the first number would be '-'. (Far sighted or hyperopic lenses enlarge eyes and are a '+')β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
πŸ€“ Really high prescriptions have thick lenses that get thicker as you go farther from the center (think "coke bottle" glasses). They get heavy and uncomfortable when frames are very large. β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
🧐 Progressive lenses are best in a large frame to allow plenty of room for the full range lens thickness. In a tiny frame, there may not be enough space to get from the size distance lens to the full reading lens.

πŸ”₯ This super happy patient was so excited to share her results two weeks after a brow and eyelid lift! The pink arrow shows how we were able to lift both brows and bring symmetry to her droopier left brow. The purple brow points to the lifted tail of the brow - this positions the natural fat in this area to sit above the brow in a more youthful manner. She still has residual bruising and swelling, but this will continue to improve with time.
πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈ Nothing makes me happier than a happy patient! πŸ₯³

πŸ“ Surgery name: bilateral endoscopic brow lift and blepharoplasty, levator plication on her right
πŸ›Œ: 1.5 hour outpatient surgery with IV sedation (you go home the same day)
πŸ€•: For the brow lift, there is a tight headwrap for the first night and discomfort varies - some people need tylenol or tylenol #3, but some need none.

🧠 The most important and hardest part of a blepharoplasty (surgery to remove extra eyelid skin) is the skin marking. If done poorly, this can result in lagophthalmos (an eye that doesn't close no matter what), canthal webbing (weird folds of skin near the corners of the eyes), visible skin scarring, and even damage to the front of the eyes (vision loss)! Skin markings take a lot of experience to do well - look for someone who does this surgery many times a month. One way to ensure your eyelid surgeon has enough experience is to check the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons website membership list.
πŸ•ŠοΈ I prefer the "gull wing" shape, as demonstrated here, but some like an ellipse and some stop the lateral markings (the area closer to the ear) a little higher. There is no right shape for everyone!
πŸ₯‚ Tell me what you are doing to celebrate the holidays this year! 🦌

β˜€οΈ Good morning from the official oculoplastics society ( ) fall meeting, where I had the privilege of moderating a session on pediatric and lacrimal system disorders. It's so exciting to see all the amazing research and surgical improvements!

πŸ™ Congratulations to the outstanding program organized by the two woman directors - a first for our society!! πŸ’ͺ

πŸ₯³ Did you know that is when a person has "work on the top, party on the bottom"? I wouldn't say I've got party pants on (but do have pants on!), but I'm not wearing shoes, which is definitely a first for me during a national meeting!

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘¦β€πŸ‘¦ Family time this Saturday morning! As I am trying to get exercise back into my life, I get the bonus of trying to get the boys excited to get out there. ⚽ This is Luke after his outdoor soccer class and, on the way there, Alex (who is 6) ran a whole mile, only stopping once! πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸ’ͺ
🌱Enjoy the beautiful day!
