Have you worked with a Nutritionist or Registered Dietitian before?

1) Did they say things that triggered you?
2) Did they share information that was useful?

Both of these can be true. We live in a culture where the act of eating itself comes with judgment (our own and others).

I’m interested in hearing your experiences below or in my DMs.

What’s your mindful habit? And what’s your mindless habit?

Taking care of our bodies is not just a routine; it’s a mindful habit that reflects our values and priorities. For those of us who have the privilege to choose when to shower or what to wear, these decisions often come naturally. We consider the products we use on our hair and skin, often gravitating towards those that “feel good” resonate with our personal style or ethical beliefs. Why not extend that same level of mindfulness to our nutrition as well?

When we build our plates or make food choices, we can also be intentional about what we are putting into our bodies ( I DO NOT mean eat less!).

Tip: when possible and if you have the emotional bandwidth, take a moment before your next meal to reflect on the colors, smells, and textures of the food in front of you. This practice can help enhance your appreciation for what you’re nourishing your body with.

As for me, I want to be more mindful about carving out time for rest and recovery. I can’t take care of others if I’m pouring from an empty cup.

❌ The truth: Your body doesn’t stop working at night. And we all have different 24-hour sleep/wake cycles. If someone works on a 24-hour schedule, setting arbitrary times to stop eating is not applicable.

Building a balanced plate that contains all the macronutrients —protein, fats, and carbohydrates—consumed at times that meet your individual body’s needs will be far more productive than setting rigid fasting times.

Let’s talk about it in the comments⤵👇🏾. DM me if you’re looking for support.

The truth: Cultural foods are often nutrient-rich and grounded in centuries of wisdom. Health isn’t limited to Anglo American and Anglo European food norms—heritage dishes from the African diaspora can absolutely support well-being and food freedom.

This Juneteenth, we celebrate not just freedom, but the resilience, creativity, and nourishment that African American communities have cultivated and passed down through generations. From collard greens rich in calcium and fiber, to black-eyed peas packed with plant-based protein, to sweet potatoes full of beta-carotene—these foods tell a story of survival, adaptation, and deep-rooted cultural pride.

Cornbread, okra, rice dishes, stewed greens, and grilled or braised meats have become cornerstones of American cuisine, shaped by the hands of enslaved Africans who made a way out of what they had. These dishes are more than sustenance—they’re legacy, identity, and celebration on a plate.

This Juneteenth, honor the richness of African American foodways. Try a heritage recipe, learn its history, and experience how cultural foods nourish body, soul, and community.

Name some of your favorites in the comments! Happy Juneteenth! ❤️🖤💚

Common fears around cultural foods and how to reframe them 👇🏾

“I was told to stop eating my family’s food — so I stopped eating altogether.”

I’ve heard this too many times. As provders at Maya Feller Nutrition, we understnd the complexities of the foodscape and the serious confusion that arises from competing and conflcting nutrition information. Eat seed oils, don’t use them, switch to beef tallow.. what is a person to do?

Diet culture often dismisses culturally relevant dishes from cusisnes that are not ango-American or Ango-European as “unhealthy” without context or care.

Let’s reframe: Meals from around the globe are often rooted in nutrient-dense, fiber-rich, and full of tradition. We know the research is slow to catch up. So I’m here to remind you that they can be part of any supportive eating pattern.

🧡 Healing starts with honoring our stories, not erasing them.

Yes, there’s a lot of hype around saunas and ice baths are trending for “wellness,” “longevity,” and “recovery.”

But let’s pause. As with many wellness trends, these aren’t new ideas. They’re ancestral traditions — deeply rooted in the cultures that created them.

🇫🇮 In Finland
Saunas are more than just sweat.
They’re sacred spaces for cleansing, healing, and connection — often followed by a cold plunge in a lake or snow.

For Finns, this practice is about balance and resilience, passed down through generations. It’s not luxury. It’s everyday life.
→ Research now supports what this tradition has known for centuries: benefits for heart health, circulation, and mental clarity.

🇲🇽 In Mexico
The temazcal — an Indigenous sweat lodge used by Aztec, Maya, and other cultures — offers spiritual and physical renewal.

Steam infused with herbs, volcanic rock, and ritual are used to heal, purify, and reconnect with ancestry.
→ Cold water, river plunges, and herbal compresses are also part of curanderismo — traditional healing rooted in harmony with nature.

✨ Whether it’s sauna or temazcal, ice or river…
These practices reflect a deeper truth:
Healing didn’t start in wellness trends. It started in culture.

What healing traditions do you come from? Let’s honor them, not just replicate them. Drop a 🌿 to keep the convo grounded.

You’ve probably seen more people even without diabetes wearing CGMs (continuous glucose monitors). So what’s the deal?

Here’s why someone might choose to try one:

🔎 Insight, not obsession
A CGM gives real-time feedback about how different foods, stress, movement, and sleep affect your unique blood sugar patterns — not the averages. It could also be a good tool for someone with prediabetes and someone experiencing perimenopausal symptoms.

🍽️ Personalized learning
It’s not about labeling foods as “bad” or “off-limits.” It’s about learning which food combinations help you feel steady, focused, and nourished throughout the day.

💡 Clarity over confusion
If you feel fatigued after meals or experience energy crashes, a CGM can help identify patterns that nutrition alone might not explain.

🚫 What it’s not
It’s not a moral report card. It’s not for micromanaging every bite.
Gentle nutrition means using tools like CGMs as guides — not judges.

🧡 Most importantly: A CGM is a personal choice, not a requirement. If you’re curious, talk to a healthcare provider who understands your goals and values your whole health picture.

Would you ever try a CGM? What would you want to learn from it? Reach out to us at Maya Feller Nutrition, we are here to work with you.

You may have heard that carbs are the enemy when it comes to blood sugar… but the truth is, it’s more about context than restriction.

Fiber-rich carbs (like beans, fruits, and whole grains) paired with protein and fats can actually support more stable blood sugars. Think of the proteins and heart healthy fats as a base that helps your body manage the naturally occuring sugars found in all carbs.

✨ Gentle and inclusive nutrition means making space for all culturally relevant foods — without shame.

🍽 What’s your favorite way to enjoy carbs that make you feel good?
