This month is Su***de Prevention and Awareness Month. Traditionally, BIPOC individuals experiencing suicidality have been underserved or recognized due to the harmful stereotypes and system barriers they experience. It is important to continually address and break the stigma to provide the necessary care for those struggling with su***de.

Psychology has often been critiqued as a tool of Western colonialism, but it also holds the power to liberate and resist oppression. In his article, Rami Gabriel delves into how psychology can help us understand our identities in the context of colonial histories, turning self-knowledge into a form of resistance. By integrating local philosophies, thinkers like Frantz Fanon and Girindrasekhar Bose used psychology to challenge colonial narratives and empower individuals and communities. This highlights the dual nature of psychology as both a tool of control and a powerful language for liberation.

❇️One concept within intersectional counseling is the idea of unlearning or detaching ourselves from those systems or identities that have caused us to struggle or suffer through obstacles. The concept of decolonization invites us to do that. Decolonization is the idea of dismantling the pervasive influence of colonialism and its lingering effects on individuals and communities. It calls for the client and therapist to look back at integrating the cultural practices, beliefs, and healing traditions within the sessions. This involves respecting and incorporating non-Western and indigenous ways of knowing and healing. This quote is a reminder of looking back at our relationships to address healing and collective well-being.

Dr.Forrest Hamer is an African American psychoanalyst who also writes his own poetry. He uses poetry to share his personal experiences and talk about complexities of identity, family, and history. He uses poetry as an opportunity for people to listen and gage into their own internal complexities while also being communally attuned.

💭Setting boundaries has been a popular topic on social media. A benefit of having boundaries is the ability to protect yourself from disrespect, and manipulation and advocate for your needs in relationships that are causing harm. However, in relationships with close friends and family, this can become difficult to do.

💭The message of uncompromising and rigidness in boundaries on social media can hurt a healthy relationship. It can also be seen as abandoning a relationship without taking accountability ourselves.

💭When setting boundaries, it is important to consider both parties’ needs and practice mutuality. A relationship is a two-way street and allowing for open communication and flexibility can allow us to foster better connection.

🤔What do you think? Does setting boundaries means letting go of a relationship or should it be more fluid?

➡️At Wove, we believe in remaining true to our clients and practice in an anti-oppressive and intersectional lens. Misconceptions about therapy have been prominent in our field and still roar through it now with social media. We believe clients should never be at a disadvantage which is why we believe to be critical is to question everything even the misconceptions we may find ourselves believing.

➡️Relational Therapy is one of those approaches that allows us to focus on your whole experience rather than one event to help you conceptualize your current obstacles. It is a great way for clients to understand what a healthy relationship can look like through trust and communication with their therapist.
