85% of nutrient content claims on beef organ supplements are noncompliant with U.S. labeling regulations.

That’s not a few bad actors. That’s nearly the entire category.

A study examined 49 commercially sold beef liver supplements. 59% had at least one labeling violation. The nutrients listed on the label may not reflect what’s actually in the product.

Beef organ supplements are everywhere right now. The theory behind them is real — organ meats are among the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet. Liver is exceptionally high in B12, vitamin A, copper, and choline. Heart is one of the richest dietary sources of CoQ10. Spleen contains some of the highest concentrations of heme iron of any food.

The problem is what happens between the organ and the capsule.

Most supplements contain 1 to 3 grams of dried powder per serving, a fraction of what you’d get from eating actual liver. Heat-sensitive compounds like B vitamins are vulnerable to losses during processing. And the clinical trials evaluating beef organ supplements in humans? Almost none exist.

The claims rest on three things: the nutrient profile of fresh organ meats, animal studies, and testimonials. None of those is a clinical trial.

One more thing worth knowing: beef liver is extremely high in preformed vitamin A. Fat-soluble vitamins accumulate in the body. If you’re already taking a multivitamin or eating fortified foods, the math can add up to unsafe levels quickly.

The trend is pointing at something real. That doesn’t mean the pill delivers it.
