Around the world of Clubhouse: This month we're in New York, USA!
On July 28, 2025, Harlem celebrated the opening of a new city-funded peer Clubhouse operated by Phoenix House. The ribbon-cutting ceremony featured prominent figures including City Council member Yusef Salaam, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, and Assembly member Jordan Wright, who collectively marked the launch of this valuable community resource.
The Clubhouse, which had quietly begun welcoming members on June 2, currently serves 17 adult members living with serious mental illness. Designed to support up to around 300 individuals, it offers a welcoming, member-driven space where people can connect, grow, and access various services—all free and voluntary, without needing insurance or court referrals.
As a Department of Health and Mental Hygiene spokesperson noted, the city’s current investment in expanding the Clubhouse Model reflects its potential to foster meaningful support for those struggling with serious mental illness.
The Harlem location was thoughtfully designed to enhance wellness—including a bright, light-filled interior, an ADA-compliant kitchen where members try out viral TikTok recipes, a courtyard garden for “Kickback Fridays,” and a developing tech lab for building digital confidence. D.A. Bragg praised the program’s holistic approach: “Feeding people, helping their education, employment development, and then just being together, in community with one another… that makes a strong, healthy safe neighborhood”
During the ceremony, a member named Erica Moore shared how profoundly the Clubhouse impacted her journey: “When I first walked into Phoenix House Harlem Clubhouse, I came with the heart to serve and support others… What I didn’t expect was the mirror it would hold up to my own life”.
In essence, the ribbon-cutting marked not just a physical unveiling, but the expansion of a transformative model—one rooted in peer support and empowerment—bringing hope, purpose, and community to Harlem.
