Modifications are essential to ensure both safety and effectiveness of each exercise for our athletes.

What ❌ work: Just picking an exercise and assuming tempo and technique will just “happen” along the way

What ✅ work: understanding where and how the exercise breaks down and providing the appropriate modification, along with behavior specific praise and differential reinforcement to develop the strength and motor planning necessary to progress the exercise

“You have to have patience…”

It’s overgeneralizing but still true. Here’s the context;

Our and athletes often have gaps in strength and motor skill (see also; kinesthetic awareness). Additionally, deregulated behavior may inhibit full participation.

This means we often need to provide both modified variations of foundational exercises AND hold the expectation that our athlete(s) will need more time to control the movement independently, leading to a greater training effect.
