A religious founder of the19th century had some very modern ideas. She said: "Delineate thoughts of health on your body." She is not far from a somewhat later founder who said: "Let your neck be free in order for your head to go forward and up, and your back to lengthen and widen." They invited us to attend to our marvelous, elegant, exquisitely designed bodies, and to be mindful of their functions. What about the lowliest, vital functions of elimination? Abuse them, neglect them, overwork them, deny them at your risk. Delineate thoughts of health on them equal to your limbs, your flexible and curvaceous spine, your head's resting upon your atlanto-occipital joint. They'll all reward you, "the high and the low, the low and the high. All I, I, I, I itself, I" Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

Your posture is telling your story, predicting your future, lifting you up or pulling you down. It supports your words, your aspirations, or contradicts them. The most vital way, the most productive way of taking a look at your posture is Alexander Technique. If some say the Alexander Technique is not about posture, I agree. It is not ABOUT posture, it is posture itself, your very bearing. Come in, we'll have look and if you do not sense change, your fee, $75.00 for a 45 minute lesson will be graciously refunded. You've nothing to loose but your habits and fixations. We've all got some of those.

Music to a practitioner's ears from a former ballet dancer and now writer, a familiar tune to most every teacher of Alexander Technique: "Alan is tremendously skilled at what he does! He works in such a subtle and attuned way, truly listening to my body and what it needs. Where the resistance is, where the invitations lie. Even a few sessions has already made a marked positive impact in helping me release and rewire habitual neck tension that has bothered me for many years. I walk out of sessions feeling like I'm floating, so light and effortless! Alexander Technique with Alan is helping more than any other body work modality I have tried (and I've tried a good number for this issue over the years). I highly recommend working with him if you have any chronic tension or pain."

Walking can be medicinal. Walk as though your feet were kissing the earth, says Thich Nhat Hanh, as though your feet were turning the world, I'd add, and again, as though each foot were painting a full image of its self, heel to toe, upon the sidewalk or the Earth itself. Rush, and you diminish your wholesome contact with the Earth, a terrible waste.

The solar plexus, despite it almost mythic name, is a very real place in the human body. It is a meeting of ganglia, a juncture of nerves, many of them related to the autonomic nervous system, the ebb and flow of fluids and fuels for instance. It lies just above the navel. Right now, please, place your hand flat upon your abdomen just above your navel, and turn your hand in place, the fingers rising, the palm staying in place, a pleasant torquing up. The solar plexus is the place of origin of the leg muscles, at least some of them. Release and reiterate, gently, the whole of the hand flat and opening. Turn your hand in place. If you do not feel something, you may be a mollusk. I'm just sayin'.

What do we know of our selves that is not manifest in our hands, embracing,, caressing, repelling, impelling, suggesting, yielding, sensing, pulling, giving, grasping, dismissing? It's a handful. Touch without agenda is equally precious as uncommon. The touch of the Alexander Technique professional begins with an inventory of the self. Am I free, free from wanting? Am I armoring my very vulnerable extremieties? Holding on to them, pulling myself tortoise-like into my shell.? Freeing our selves insomuch as we are able, we connect to another, sharing the math of Alexander Technique: 1 +1 is greater than 2. The unbiased hand that comes to another in this tortured age shatters convention, undoes the holds on by which we may know ourselves, relievies mind and muscle. I am startled by its continuing efficacy.

Anticipation seems neither good nor bad until you notice what it's doing to your shoulders.

If you lift your arm to shoulder height without shortening it, relying less or not at all upon biceps and triceps you'll feel other msucles working, particularly those in of your back. To some it might register as low-level pain. Doing so frees the fingers for dexterous work on canvas or keyboard or manuscript. Taking the arm of another into your own two hands invites them to lengthen, to let the arm away from the torso. It is a cost-free kindness.

Our Story

Whatever it is that you do, whatever it is that you're doing, there is a sweet spot to be found, a position of mechanical advantage, F. M. Alexander called it. Helping you find that sweet spot in in everything you do is the purpose of the Alexander Technique. Not misuse, which is too much, or disuse which is too little, but your own sweet economy in everything you do, your best use in any given moment. That's our purpose here.
