🥣 Metal singing bowls are complex acoustic resonators. They are not single-pitch instruments. When played, the bowl vibrates in multiple modes—radial, tangential, and standing waves. These vibrations produce a series of partial frequencies, or overtones, above the fundamental tone.

🎵 Overtones are frequencies above the fundamental. When they align with specific integer multiples of the fundamental, they are called harmonics. The pattern and strength of these overtones give each bowl its distinctive sound.

🔬 The resonant frequencies of a bowl depend on its size, thickness, and metal composition. For example, smaller bowls produce higher tones. Larger bowls produce deeper, more powerful resonances.

🌫 Metal bowls are unique because they generate many partials at once, both harmonic and inharmonic. This creates a rich, layered sound spectrum with depth and complexity.

🌀 These layered frequencies make metal bowls especially effective for sound meditation. They can entrain brainwaves, shifting the mind from active beta waves to more relaxed alpha and theta states. This encourages calm and focus.

💓 The vibrations also resonate physically within the body. Bones, tissues, and organs respond to these subtle vibrations. This can release tension and create a sense of internal alignment.

🍵In winter, the body naturally seeks warmth, circulation, and digestive support. Drinking warm tea helps counter the cold, dry qualities of the season. It promotes internal heat, hydration, and digestive fire, known in Ayurveda as agni.

🌿 Ayurvedic teas traditionally favored in winter include:

-Ginger tea. Warming and stimulating. It supports digestion and circulation.

-Tulsi, also called Holy Basil. Grounding and supportive of the immune system.

-Cinnamon tea. Gently heating and helpful for balancing cold and sluggish digestion.

-Licorice root tea. Soothing and moistening. It supports the throat and respiratory system.

-Chai, or spiced tea. A blend of warming spices such as cardamom, clove, ginger, and black pepper. It supports circulation and digestion.

🧘 Sipped slowly, warm tea is a wonderful winter ritual that supports nourishment from the inside out.

🌀 Elongation in yoga is more than stretching—it’s about creating space along the spine and through the body so energy can flow freely. ✨

In yogic tradition, Kundalini is a potent Shakti (energy) that lies dormant at the base of the spine, often symbolized as a coiled serpent. 🐍

When the spine is lengthened and aligned through elongation, it creates an open pathway along the sushumna nadi (the central energy channel). This alignment allows prana (life force) to move upward without obstruction, activating the chakras and supporting your energetic flow.

🙆‍♀️ Poses like Urdhva Hastasana (Upward Salute), Anjaneyasana (Crescent Lunge), Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Dog), and Marjaryasana-Bitilasana (Cat-Cow) actively decompress the spine, open the chest, and release tension in the shoulders and hips. 🐱🐶

🧍‍♀️ The physical benefits of elongation further include: improved posture, less pressure on the vertebrae, healthy breathing, better digestion, and reduced stiffness that accumulates from sitting or slouching. 🌬️

In Ayurveda, abhyanga is a daily ritual of self-massage using warm oil. 🫶

Traditionally done before showering, it’s been an especially supportive addition to our beloved studio manager Lillah’s night routine during the winter months.

This practice helps to:
 • Soothe the nervous system & reduce stress 🌿
 • Improve circulation & lymphatic flow ✨
 • Support healthy skin & joints 💧
 • Signal to the body that the day is winding down 🌙

More than skincare, abhyanga is a moment of devotion to yourself. It’s a gentle reminder to slow down and nourish your own body and mind.

✨ Tips:
Warm your oil and massage in long, slow strokes along the long bones, using gentle circular motions around the joints like the knees and elbows. Move in the direction of hair growth, and massage clockwise on the abdomen to support digestion.

Sesame oil is traditionally used for vata, coconut oil for pitta, and sunflower or safflower oil for kapha. Let the oil soak in for 10 to 20 minutes before rinsing. 🚿
