Where Caring Inspires Success CIS is also there in times of crisis with response services designed to help address immediate and secondary trauma.

Counseling in Schools (“CIS”) works to promote the emotional and social growth of children so that they can thrive in school and succeed in life. Through the work of our more than 100 clinical psychologist and certified social workers, CIS helps children deal with issues such as abuse, homelessness, bullying, violence and other concerns. We support students to ensure that they stay in school and have a positive learning experience, and in turn create a calmer classroom environment that benefits all children in a school. We provide targeted programs to administrators, teachers, guidance counselors and other support service providers in the school community, helping those professionals avoid the burnout that is common when working in challenging schools, and supporting administrators trying to turn around failing schools. In response to increasing demand, CIS has quadrupled in size since its inception. We remain committed to our mission and have demonstrated our ability to meet the growing need without compromising quality. CIS is a non-profit 501(c)3 community-based organization, supporting students at risk in New York City public schools. We work with students in their environment, be it their school, home or shelter, and help to build more resilient communities. The value of CIS initiatives is recognized and supported by the New York City Department of Education, United States Federal Emergency Management Association, and the Office of the Mayor of the City of New York. 💙 In our schools and communities, CIS counselors provide support for students navigating the unique challenges of transition, separation, and change. On Veterans Day, we pause to give thanks and recommit to providing care and stability for every student who needs it.

📚💡 At our September prep session, more than three dozen CIS counselors gathered to sharpen their tools for the year ahead. Together, we explored strategies for supporting students through anxiety, changes in school policy, and safety concerns — because we know the first 8 weeks set the tone for the entire year.

Every word of encouragement matters. Every strategy matters. Last year alone, CIS supported over 6,700 students, 2,000 family members, and 1,400 staff — and this year, we’re ready to do even more.

📚💡 En nuestra sesión preparatoria de septiembre, más de treinta consejeros de CIS se reunieron para perfeccionar sus habilidades de cara al año que viene. Juntos, exploramos estrategias para apoyar a los alumnos a superar la ansiedad, los cambios en las políticas escolares y las preocupaciones por la seguridad, porque sabemos que las primeras 8 semanas sientan las bases para todo el año.

💙 PS 47 hosted a Million Father March—a powerful day of connection between fathers, school staff, and students.

Facilitated by Principal Guarnieri’s fraternity brothers and supported by CIS staff, school dads spent the morning visiting classrooms, joining read-alouds, and engaging in thoughtful conversations about their role in the school community.

CIS Community School Director Kelly shared resources, raffled off family movie-night popcorn kits 🍿, and welcomed new families into CIS services.

💙 PS 47 organizó una Marcha del Millón de Padres, una jornada repleta de significado en la que se fomentó la conexión entre padres, personal escolar y alumnos.

Con la ayuda de los hermanos de la fraternidad de Principal Guarnieri y el apoyo del personal de CIS, los padres de la escuela dedicaron la mañana a visitar las aulas, participaron en lecturas en voz alta y mantuvieron conversaciones profundas sobre su rol en la comunidad escolar.
