It’s World Chagas Disease Day

More than 7 million people worldwide are estimated to be infected with Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasite that causes Chagas disease – causing 10 000 deaths yearly. This potentially life-threatening illness is transmitted through contact with the faeces or urine of a triatomine bug. It can also be transmitted from mother to child, through contaminated food, by blood transfusion, organ transplantation and laboratory accident.

Chagas disease is mainly found in Latin America. However, it has been increasingly detected in other parts of the world.

There is no vaccine for Chagas disease. Seeking early treatment is crucial as the efficacy of drugs diminishes the longer a person has been infected.
