Calling all who need access to New York vital records...time to speak up again!

Call for Action: Access to New York State Vital Records

The New York Governor’s proposed FY 2026 budget attempts to address the extremely long wait times for obtaining both genealogical and certified vital records from the New York State Department of Health (DOH). However, it includes a bill to amend the current public health law regarding access to and fees for New York State vital records, which would negatively impact current and future record requests.

The NYG&B has put together an informational resource page about the bill’s impact and provide tangible next steps to make your voices heard on this issue. Learn how you can take action between now and February 11, 2025, when the New York State Senate is holding a Joint Legislative Public Hearing on 2025 Executive Budget Proposal: Topic Health/Medicaid to open this issue for public review. https://www.newyorkfamilyhistory.org/blog/call-action-regarding-access-new-york-state-vital-records

Exciting news from the NYG&B!

Our Digitize New York initiative is growing! We’re partnering with organizations across New York State to preserve their at-risk historical documents. And thanks to generous support from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation a new Central New York Digitization Center, opening in Syracuse later in 2024, will double the NYG&B’s capacity to preserve and make available historical records. Really looking forward to this event next week! I am partway through the book and already full of questions for Mr. Shorto.

Best-selling author Russell Shorto, praised for his incisive works of narrative history, never thought to write about his own past. He grew up knowing his grandfather and namesake was a small-town mob boss but maintained an unspoken family vow of silence. Then an elderly relative prodded: You’re a...
