Hello all,

Our topic for next Wednesday's discussion will be The Ethical, Legal and Personal Dilemmas Doctors Face with Regards to Providing Abortions.

The issues around a woman’s right to seek an abortion are highly complex, permeating today’s increasingly polarized national discord. This week we will be discussing the role physicians play in the issue and the effects the hyper-politicization of the issue continue to have on physician training and the practice of medicine. We will discuss how physicians make the decision to provide / not to provide a controversial service, even when doing so conflicts with their personal ethics, the ethics of their community, and in some instances, even their personal safety.

As always, there is nothing to prepare for PLR meetings, but we have attached relevant articles below. Our hope, with the attached articles, is to provide an overview of the current state of abortion law and education in this country as well as to open the door to conversations about the challenges physicians face in navigating such a politically (and emotionally) charged aspect of medicine. Feel free to post any other articles you find interesting below and we can discuss them at the meeting as well

Looking forward to hearing everybody's thoughts!

Hey Post-Baccs,

Hope you all had a great summer! We are pleased to announce that the Post-bacc Literary Review (PLR) will be running again this year and will include a host of new events that are sure to be interesting, fun and informative.

For those of you who have not experienced it, PLR is a space for us to improve our understanding of the medical field, whether by discussing the latest research, hosting panels of doctors/medical students/professors, or by sharing our own pre-med experiences and aspirations.

We are really excited about what we have planned for the year, but before announcing any events, we'd like to have an introductory meeting to get to know each other and learn about your interests and ideas so we can better plan what we'll explore.

Our first meeting will be next Tuesday, September 27th, from 6:30PM-7:30PM in the Silver building, room 512. There will be snacks and drinks!

Current ideas for panels/discussions include:
The Evolving and Multifaceted Field of Medicine: Hear from dermatologist, author, and associate professor at NYU's School of Medicine, Dr. Doris Day, on her perspective on the current state of medicine and its evolution. Also learn about the opportunities within medicine to incorporate personal interests into your practice, maintaining a work-life balance and finding your own professional path.
The Real Medical School Experience: An opportunity to hear about the application process, gap year considerations and medical school from a panel of former post-bacc students and current medical school students.

No preparation is ever required! Just bring yourself, your thoughts, and an open mind! If you are planning to attend, please let us know by messaging Sabrina, Nessie, Clare or Max. We'll also add you to our mailing list.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Best,
PLR team
