Around 8 months your child should be able to achieve lip closure, necessary to eat foods such as purées off spoon. This not a step you want to skip. Articulation (speech skills) are affected by these oral motor eating /drinks skills. Lack of lip closure means a child will not get the input they need to develop /b/ /p/ /m/. These are bilabial sounds named for their production which requires lip closure
