At BRC, Pride isn’t just a celebration, it’s a practice. A daily commitment to inclusion, equity, and dignity for every person who walks through our doors.

Our former Lexington Avenue Women’s Residence was one of only four shelters in NYC selected by the Department of Homeless Services to launch a specialized initiative to improve services for transgender New Yorkers. Today, our Reaching New Heights Residence in the Bronx continues this legacy as a designated LGBTQ+ shelter.

At our Glass Factory Apartments in Manhattan’s East Village, the team ensures that LGBTQIA+ residents feel not only housed, but truly at home. Glass Factory Program Director DeCardio Hutchins creates an environment where clients feel safe to be themselves. The site even includes a small library with a special curated section of LGBTQIA+ literature. Glass Factory also proudly celebrates Pride Month every June, transforming the space with decorations and affirming messages.

“I was raised to treat others the way I want to be treated. This is a home for them—where they can be themselves around peers and seek solace in times of need.”

Looking good crew! A huge thank you to the team over at Turner Construction Company for pitching in and painting the lobby of BRC’s Parkview Residence last week. Parkview provides shelter and support for up to 200 men with mental health service needs.

A huge thank you to Downtown Alliance for hosting this screening of The Warriors last night in support of BRC at IPIC. The crowd was great, and we really enjoyed the conversation between Neil Rosen and Michael Gingold afterwards. It was interesting to hear about what went into making the film and how the director worked to ensure that it accurately represented 1970’s NYC.

Please join us for The Way Home Gala on June 9 at the Ziegfeld Ballroom as we honor our fearless leader, Muzzy Rosenblatt, and celebrate 25 years of transformative leadership and his commitment to our clients and the mission of Bowery Residents' Committee.

During Muzzy's tenure, BRC has grown more than tenfold, despite historic turbulence: 9/11, the 2008 global financial crisis, Hurricane Sandy, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Through it all, Muzzy has ensured that every person who walks through the doors at BRC is treated with dignity and respect.

Your attendance at The Way Home Gala will contribute directly to BRC's innovative and groundbreaking programs, providing critical resources for New Yorkers experiencing homelessness and helping them reclaim their lives and achieve their potential.

"About a third of the families living in New York City’s homeless shelters, not including migrants, have at least one adult who gets up and goes to work. But their salaries — some as high as $40,000 or $50,000 or more — are outmatched by the depth of the city’s affordability crisis and the severity of its housing crunch."

NY Times affordability reporter, Eliza Shapiro, spoke to BRC clients living at Blue Sky Residence (Queens) and Reaching New Heights (Bronx), along with others experiencing homelessness, about the difficulties of being able to afford, and keep, housing - even when working full time.

Thousands of working people in New York City now live in shelters, unable to afford apartments despite holding down jobs that pay them $50,000 or more.

“What makes me excited about coming to work at BRC every day is working in an organization whose true north star is serving our clients with the dignity and respect they deserve, in an environment that is creative and supportive of career growth.”

March is Social Work Month, and social workers are at the core of all we do at BRC. We have been fortunate that so many incredible social workers have decided to nurture and grow their careers here. We would like to highlight one of them today.

Our Chief Program Officer, Kelly Quirk, is a licensed social worker, and has been a part of the BRC team for 18 years. Kelly chose this career path because social work is all about meeting individuals where they are and serving their basic life needs, mental health
and treatment needs, and being a change agent in systems to ensure they get the care they deserve.

Thank you, Kelly, and all of the social workers who are administering care and performing critical duties for those who need it the most.
