For Brooklyn resident Idiatou Diallo, finally getting answers changed everything. After months of worsening symptoms and visits to emergency departments and physicians across the borough, she was eventually diagnosed with advanced non-Hodgkin lymphoma at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn and began immediate, multidisciplinary cancer care.

Her experience reflects a decade of transformation at the hospital following its merger with Lutheran Medical Center, which has resulted in expanded access to high-quality specialty care close to home for Brooklyn residents.

After 72-year-old Richard Sabbagh stepped out of the shower one day, he felt a sudden sensation in his brain and weakness on his left side that struck without warning. His son Robert immediately recognized the signs of a stroke, called 911, and within minutes he was en route to NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn.

There, a multidisciplinary team was ready for Richard’s arrival and sprung into action to administer treatment the moment he was rolled into the emergency department. Within hours, his symptoms had improved, and he was discharged home two days later without the need for major rehab.

“This was a textbook example of how our multidisciplinary approach—spanning neurology, emergency medicine, radiology, nursing, and therapy—sets us apart,” says Dr. Matthew D. Sanger, the vascular neurologist who oversaw Richard’s care. “We work together seamlessly to achieve the best patient outcome.”

NYU Langone hospitals received an “A” grade in patient safety from The Leapfrog Group, joining just one percent of hospitals nationwide to receive this distinction 11 times consecutively.

The “A” rating applies to our Tisch Hospital and Kimmel Pavilion in Manhattan, NYU Langone Hospital - Long Island, and NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn. Additionally, NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk advanced from a "C" to a "B" Leapfrog grade just eight months after completing its merger with the health system.

“NYU Langone’s reputation in the communities we serve is built on a foundation of safe, top quality care, thanks to our teams who put their patients first every day,” said Alec Kimmelman, MD, PhD, Dean and CEO of NYU Langone Health. “Leapfrog is one of the best barometers patients can look to in determining where to receive their care, and we are proud of these ratings. This includes NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk, where the pace of improvements has been extraordinary, because of the incredible work of our teams there.”
