April is national stress awareness month. Stress is defined as any challenge that can affect a person’s thoughts, behavior and feelings. Some warning signs of stress are headaches, feeling overwhelmed, lack of sleep, difficulty concentrating and lack of appetite. Different people react to stress in different ways like biting their nails, grinding your teeth, picking at the skin, snapping at people and much more. The best way to decrease feeling stressed is by taking deep breaths, thinking of positive thoughts, laughing, connecting with others and meditation/yoga. If you or anyone you know is experiencing signs of stress that is beyond the normal feelings please consult with your physician for help.

February is heart healthy month. So keeping your heart beating at the right pace, is what is needed to live a long healthy life. Also eating heart healthy foods such as vegetables (cabbage, carrots, broccoli and tomatoes) , proteins (skinless chicken, eggs, 95% lean beef or pork), fruits (apples, bananas, oranges, pears, grapes and berries), whole grains (brown rice, whole grain pasta, bread and tortillas) and healthy fats (nuts, salmon, sardines, avocados, sesame or sunflower seeds and soybean) are foods to keep in mind which promotes a healthy flow of blood to the heart. Lastly, regular exercise like running, jogging, jumping jacks, basketball etc, will keep the heart pumping at a great pace. If you or anyone you know is experiencing pain in the heart or any other unusual feeling in their heart, please consult with your physician. Remember early detection saves lives.

April is alcohol awareness month. Alcohol is a huge part of the American culture but the amount of alcohol that a person consumes can have a huge impact on the body. Ethanol, which is an ingredient in alcohol, is what gets a person intoxicated. Therefore, knowing your limit is very important for your body to function correctly. The liver absorbs alcohol and too much alcohol can be detrimental to a person’s health.
Some short term effects of alcohol are vomiting, slurred speech, visual impairments, loss of concentration and loss of critical judgment etc. On the other hand, long term effects on the body are liver damage, strokes, cancer, brain damage and irregular heart beat etc. Alcohol also travels through the blood stream which then passes through the blood- brain barrier. This can make a person feel dizzy and can impair your processing of information and balancing. Therefore it is best to leave the alcohol alone and not drink. If you or anyone you may know is suffering from alcohol poisoning, please consult with your physician. Early treatment is known to save lives.
