Happy PCOS Awareness Month!

Polycystic O***y Syndrome (sometimes referred to as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) is understood to be an endocrine disorder. However, I would argue it is just as much a metabolic syndrome. Insulin resistance is prevalent in 70% of those with PCOS. More info on PCOS to come soon!

OH AND JUST A HUGE FYI: I am super anti-medication for PCOS management. Medications don’t typically help to heal your body, instead they manage symptoms. And we know managing symptoms can be done naturally with nutritional and lifestyle changes. However I respect others who wish to use medication which is why I included medication in the graphic!

We use our latissimus dorsi [or Lats for short] every single day in a variety of ways. Whether you are a NYCΒ  construction worker finishing a 10 hour shift or a dog mom picking up her babies, we all need our back to be strong to protect and support our skeletal frame.

But we need to also protect our lats (and other back muscles) for them to actually do their job properly. The Lats are responsible for extension,
adduction, transverse extension,
horizontal abduction, flexion from an extended position, and (medial) internal rotation of the shoulder joint πŸ€“πŸ€“πŸ“–......needless to say IT DOES ALOT!

So here are 2 stretches you can do when you feel like you need a good old stretch.

STANDING SIDE BEND- nothing fancy here. Key is keeping your back straight (not bent forward or backwards at any time).
- extend the arm of the side you wish to work on, toward the sky, parallel to your head. Your elbow should beΒ  Is roughly around your ear.
-Β  With your arm straight, bend to the opposite side while maintaing a straight back.
- hold for a few seconds and slowly return to the starting position.

LATS WALL STRETCH- Key here is to keep your hands planted firmly on a wall.
- keep your back as straight as possible.
- begin by lowering your chest toward the wall in a downward motion, creating a deep arch in your back, keeping your neck neutral and you hands firmly planted on the wall.
- hold for a few seconds and return back to the starting positions.

πŸ€”πŸ€”Have you ever experienced pain in your upper legs and hips after sitting for a long period of time? Or hear someone say, I need to stretch my hips?

πŸ“πŸ“Well, this is the result of tightness and tension in the illiopsas muscles ( highlighted in the photo). It’s a strong hip flexor muscle that is responsible for helping us walk, run, climb and stand up from any seated position ( πŸ’© ).

🚫That pain you feel stems from tightness in the Iliopsoas muscles, mid and lower back, the hips and sacral area, as well as the thigh region that extends towards the knee.

This can effect everyone. So let's work on this together!
