It’s been 25 years since the FDA approved mifepristone, one of two drugs used in the most common medication abortion regimen in the US.

Mife has been essential to preserving some level of abortion access in the wake of the Dobbs decision, as bans and restrictions have blocked care in entire regions of the country.

Despite decades of rigorous research showing that mife is safe and effective, anti-abortion activists are doing everything in their power to block access, including pushing shoddy science to get the FDA to rescind mife’s approval entirely or reimpose medically unnecessary restrictions that would make it harder to obtain.

We were proud to recently join the UCLA Law Center on Reproductive Health, Law, and Policy, ANSIRH and 260 researchers in calling on the FDA to reject junk science and protect access to mife.

Everyone deserves access to medication abortion without barriers, and we’ll keep fighting to make this a reality.

Mifepristone, one of two drugs used in medication abortion, has been FDA-approved for 25 years. It has been used safely and effectively by more than 7 million people in the US. And now, with a generic version approved, this essential medicine will be more readily available at an affordable price for people who need it.

This is GOOD NEWS, but of course, anti-abortion groups are upset that the process worked EXACTLY as it was supposed to: without the interference of politics. They're upset that the FDA once again proved that abortion pills are incredibly safe and in doing so, proved that there is absolutely NO legitimate, scientific reason for the Trump administration to be forcing a re-review of mifepristone.
