A great article for SLPs and parents alike! As important as reading is, storytelling can provide more practice in using complex vocabulary, sentence structure and verbal reasoning. The authors emphasize specifically that kids benefit from the use of cause/ effect and temporal sequencing of events. It’s a great learning tool that requires no special materials!

If there was one skill that could positively impact many other areas such as reading, writing, and social development, wouldn’t you want to teach it? Could oral storytelling be the key?

And every SLP breathes a sigh of relief... hearing that vocal quality always got our spidey sense tingling.

What a brilliant idea for bringing the love of language and reading to children, wherever they may be. Of course it’s from my beloved Brooklyn Public Library!

I see this ALL THE TIME in mom groups! While these comments are well meaning, they can actually have some really negative outcomes for a family. I always say, “If a child had a 30-40% chance of having cancer, would you recommend that a parent wait it out? HECK NO!" Early Intervention is key for many kids, and will only help a child- there are no negatives to seeking help and intervention does NOT mean something is "wrong" with a child. It's also important for those whose kids are "just fine without intervention" (and doctors!) to know that there are SO MANY parents who wish they had sought intervention sooner. Parents, if you could go back in time, would you have gotten intervention sooner?
