Dear Friends,

When I founded the Jorge N. Buxton, MD and Douglas F. Buxton, MD Microsurgical Education Foundation in 2010, together with my colleagues at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai, I could not have anticipated the extraordinary outpouring of support we would receive from patients, partners, friends, and colleagues around the world.

As surgeons and educators, we understood the critical importance of the work being carried out at the Buxton Microsurgical Education Center, the entity that this Foundation proudly supports. But what moved us most deeply was seeing just how much our patients — and their families and friends — understood it as well. They recognized the impact that excellence in surgical training has on the health and well-being of countless men, women, and children, both here in New York and across the globe.

This understanding is built upon three simple truths:
First, that our health is a precious gift.
Second, that we share a responsibility to do all we can to protect and improve the health of others.
And third, that we can only fulfill this responsibility by ensuring that the next generation of physicians and surgeons receives the finest possible education and training.

In many ways, that is the heart of this Foundation’s mission. The Foundation brings together healthcare professionals and compassionate supporters from all walks of life to advance this shared purpose. Whether through funding advanced surgical education at the Microsurgical Education Center, providing scholarships to promising surgeons, or supporting our global outreach missions — this is an opportunity for all of us to contribute meaningfully to improving lives through microsurgery.

The Jorge N. Buxton, MD and Douglas F. Buxton, MD Microsurgical Education Foundation was established in 2010 by Dr. Douglas F. Buxton in honor of his father and mentor, Dr. Jorge N. Buxton, a pioneer in the field of ophthalmology and microsurgery.

The Foundation supports the state-of-the-art Microsurgical Education Center at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai — one of the premier surgical training centers in the country. The Foundation also sponsors international surgical missions to underserved communities and provides scholarships to promising surgeons.
