Our Story
Zvi Zisbrod MD is a board certified cardiovascular surgeon with over 30 years of experience. His impressive background in cardiothoracic and vascular surgery gives him the expertise and deeper understanding to solve issues that might otherwise seem too complex. Over the past decade, the understanding of the importance of vein health and function has grown. Great progress has been made in treating and correcting malfunctions of the vein system where advanced, minimally invasive laser treatment modalities replaced traditional surgical procedures. Dr. Zisbrod has become one of the leading experts in this area. He implements the latest technology in the treatment of varicose veins to achieve the best possible medical, as well as cosmetic, results. Treatment Before the procedure begins, the faulty “trouble-maker” varicose veins are marked using state of the art, non-invasive ultrasound visualization. The markings will serve as a guide for Dr. Zisbrod during the procedure. A topical numbing cream is then applied to the skin, making the injection of the local anesthetic virtually painless. The area to be treated is then cleaned and prepped for the laser procedure. A laser fiber is then inserted directly into the vein through a catheter (tiny tube). Pulses of laser energy are released along the course of the vein to seal it off. Patients with bulging varicose branches who may need Mini-Phlebectomy treatment (minor treatment to remove the vein) will have it performed at the same time. The laser treatment procedure requires only a small needle puncture to the skin. Once the laser has sealed the vein, the fiber is removed and a small adhesive bandage closes the area. When the laser vein treatment procedure is complete, the leg is wrapped with elastic bandages. Post-treatment instructions are reviewed thoroughly. When patients walk out of the medical office they can return to their normal daily routine. Post-Treatment Following the laser treatment, there may be mild bruising or temporary discoloration in the treated areas – both of which are completely normal. Bruising will generally go away in 1-3 weeks. Some patients may feel tightness in the area of the treated vein, which indicates that the vein is healing. Compression stockings are highly recommended after treatment to help compress the sites of injection and promote faster healing. About 15% of patients may choose to take an over the counter pain medication such as Advil (Ibuprofen) or Tylenol, or use a topical anesthetic cream during recovery. Follow-up Sclerotherapy or laser procedure may be needed for any remaining small spider veins and can be discussed with the doctor during the follow-up visit. Sclerotherapy is considered the most effective treatment of tiny (spider) unwanted veins. This involves injecting a small amount of liquid or foam solution directly into the vein. The solution is designed to damage the inner lining of the vein, causing the vein walls to swell, stick together and shut down. Blood flow will then cease in these veins, which will be reabsorbed and be eliminated by the body. Since the needle that is used for injecting the solution is so small, the procedure is practically painless and does not require any local anesthesia. 50 – 80% of injected veins may be eliminated with each session of Sclerotherapy.
