We are officially sold out, forever 🙏

Our friends still have a few frames available for sale 🕶️👓

Thank you to the person who bought our remaining 39 pairs of frames, on Earth Day none the less.

This account and the website will no longer be monitored please reach out directly to 🤓

If you own a pair of Genusee frames, you are a part of a finite community of 15,529 who believed in our vision for the future of sustainable eyewear. Thank you for joining us on the journey to be the change we want to see. 🫶

5 years ago today, April 19th, we launched Genusee via a Kickstarter campaign and raised more than $74,000 from a community of 887 people who shared our vision for the future of eyewear and finding a solution for single-use plastic.

👓 Since then we've sold over 14,574 frames that were made in Flint from recycled plastic.

Sadly we had to make the decision to close the brand and company we so lovingly built the last 5 years & announced our wind down this past August 2022. It's been a slow burn but we are down to the last 87 Genusee frames, forever. You can now purchase the remaining frames for only $25 (Originally $99). *link in bio* 🕶️👓 go get ‘em!

Once every last frame has a home we will be officially closed. The website & social media will also be inactive & no longer monitored.

🎂 On our 5 year birthday, I'd like to remind you of Genusee's impact that we accomplished together:

*Over 2.55 tons of single-use rPET plastic upcycled into eyewear.
*Planted over 350 trees in Flint with the Genesee Conservation District.
*At our peak in 2020, we created 12 hourly wage jobs in Flint, Michigan. Throughout our four years in business we were able to create jobs for Flint residents, including a diverse population of returning citizens, structurally unemployable, and individuals with disabilities.
*Over $190,000 paid to Flint resident employees (approximately 54% of all wages & contractors/freelancers paid)
*Raised over $12,000 for charity partners

I've received a lot of questions about "WHAT IS NEXT" for me as an entrepreneur, and I haven't had that answer until now. I’ll be sharing more on my personal account

Thank you so much for sticking with us during the last 5 years, especially this year as we wind things down and close. I hope the Genusee story inspires you to follow your dreams and enjoy the journey, regardless of the outcome - because in the end it's all WINS

Hey Changemakers!

When we announced in August we were shutting down I did not expect us to still be selling glasses during Holiday 2022. But because we don’t do waste, we’ve remained open until every frame has a home. We are down to the final 400 frames and my hope is with your help we can find them all a home before the end of this year.

It’s been a slow burn winding down versus the quick goodbye I had hoped for. Our last day operating in Flint and making glasses was September 30th. And since then I’ve been fulfilling our final orders from my mom’s basement and from home. It’s been an interesting and humbling time for me as an entrepreneur, but I’ve honestly never felt more gratitude for this journey and the community of customers we have.

You can now shop the remaining inventory up to 70% off. No discount code is needed.

Regular frames $31-35
Readers $56-60
Lemon frames $8
Lemon readers $33

If you purchase frames only you can have prescription or sun lenses installed with your local optometrist OR with our friends

You can also shop Genusee frames + prescription blue light lenses directly with our friends at

Friday, December 16th will be the last day to order to receive in time for Christmas.

We will continue shipping orders through Wednesday 12/21, but cannot guarantee you will receive your order in time for Christmas if you order after the 16th.

We cannot guarantee any delivery dates that are effected by carrier delays that are out of our control. Please shop sooner than later to give your order ample time to arrive to you.

Additionally we will be closed Thursday 12/22-12/26. Orders placed during that time will be shipped on Tuesday 12/27. Please plan accordingly.

We are a one woman operation right now so thank you in advance for all your generous support & patience during our last holiday season.

Wishing you all happy holidays.

Joy & ease,
Ali Rose

Reflecting on our journey the last 4 years…

This was our first in-studio campaign shoot for Holiday 2018, after our Kickstarter. We collaborated with the amazing photographer (who also happens to be a friend I’ve known since high school in Michigan.) We were lucky enough to shoot at on a discounted weekend rate and again had friends generously model for us. + produced, styled & brought the creative vision to life.

These images still feel timeless and full of so much joy & optimism.

Our first campaign photoshoot was in 2018, prior to launching our Kickstarter campaign.

We had just completed the Elaine Gold Launch Pad accelerator.

It was photographed by my then roommate at a friends brownstone in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn.

We couldn’t afford models so we invited a bunch of friends over to model our prototypes and enticed them with snacks from Trader Joe’s and bevs.

It was a day and energy I’ll never forget & the foundation of building a brand through community.

Stay tuned for some serious nostalgia and gratitude….

Hey Changemakers

I write this update with a heavy heart.

It’s time to say goodbye.

Our last day in business will be September 30, 2022.

The uncontrollable headwinds of the current macro conditions seem too strong for our small business to continue on.

I never imagined writing those words when we launched four years ago. It has been both a blessing and a curse to be ahead of the curve when it comes to sustainability and circularity in eyewear.

I have tried my absolute hardest to find a path forward that allows Genusee to continue existing in the world and provide value for our customers, employees, investors, and stakeholders.

In early Q2 2022 Genusee pursued investment conversations in efforts to raise a seed round of funding. These efforts were met with minimal early interest or enthusiasm from existing and new investors.

We were still planning to launch a Kickstarter campaign for our highly anticipated second frame style on June 27th to crowdfund the necessary funds for the new frame tooling and production. Unfortunately, with the turbulent timing we paused the Kickstarter launch with the belief that the timing was not right, and doubts about the ability to fund a successful campaign at this time.

Unfortunately the increasing costs across our supply chain, labor, and customer acquisition costs; and macro-conditions (a pandemic, a war, and recession) all contributed to this undesirable end result.

We have a lot to be proud of. With only one frame style we have sold over 12,000 pairs of Genusee glasses, made in Flint from recycled single-use plastic bottles.

I still deeply believe in the Genusee brand, product, our mission, community, and business model, which has made this decision all the more difficult to make.

Closing Remarks:

THANK YOU for believing in Genusee, our mission, and our vision for the future of sustainable and circular economy eyewear. THANK YOU to our customers & community, current and past employees, collaborators, manufacturing partners, and retail partners for all of your hard work. You have been the soul of this brand and the only reason I had the courage to persist throughout the challenges building a business during a pandemic presented us.

I know the standards we have set and the seeds we planted in the hearts of anyone who has come into contact with Genusee will create a ripple effect of impact far beyond what we have seen in just the last four years.

My love of eyewear, entrepreneurship, and my passion for sustainability and circular supply chains has only grown. Although I do not know what is next for me, my vision for a future generation that demands businesses to be good to the core is steadfast.

I’d love to stay in contact with this community of Changemakers and if you’d like to do the same you can connect with me on social HERE: https://www.instagram.com/alirosenyc/

You may reach out to me directly with any questions you may have.
