As birth photographers, we often hear people say, "oh my goodness! That baby is so purple/blue! Was she okay?"

Yes. Yes. Yes.

Babies are often born with blue or purple skin tones, which then change to pink or red when they start breathing. This is normal!

When I photograph births, I'm often taking images of 1/200th of a second. Milliseconds of time. As you can imagine, I have the honor of documenting incredible change during the first hour of life.

We need to see more images of births so that we're prepared for this beautiful process. Because no baby anywhere is born pink, clean, and swaddled.
