University Hospital Cancer Center was proud to close out Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month with a powerful event rooted in education, prevention, and early detection.

Our community came together with a shared commitment to advancing prevention, prioritizing screening, and protecting lives.

We were honored to stand alongside distinguished leaders and advocates, including:
• Congresswoman LaMonica McIver
• Carole Johnson, CEO and President University Hospital
• Newark Councilwoman, Amina Bey
• Newark Council President, Larry Crump
• Dr. Melissa M. Alvarez-Downing
• Dr. Ana Natale Pereira
• Dr. Luis Alzate-Duque

With thoughtful moderation by Dr. Lois Greene, the discussion drove a critical focus on breaking barriers, expanding access, and prioritizing screening in the communities that need it most.

We also recognize the leadership, dedication and commitment and the attendance of:
• Katrina Schirmacher, Executive Director, UH Cancer Center
• Dr. Nancy Louis, Administrative Director, UH Oncology Services
• Brooke Tippens, Director of Community Affairs
• Keshia Brandon, Manager of Events, Department of Community Affairs
• Nutcha Elianor, Health Educator, UH Cancer Center

This work reflects a deeper commitment—
not just raising awareness, but driving action, increasing screening, and advancing health equity across Newark and beyond.

💙 Prevention isn’t optional. It’s lifesaving.

Black Futures.🖤✊🏾

• Black History Month reminds us that health equity is still part of the fight.
• Black communities experience higher rates of several cancers, but early detection saves lives.

This month, we honor the legacy of those who paved the way by empowering our communities with knowledge, screenings, and support.
