Hope fuels recovery, and recovery transforms lives.

I met Don at a volunteer outing I do at the Drop-In Center on Main St. We hit it off right away. After I meet someone, I gauge where they are at and then I share some of my story. With Don, I shared my story and how, with the help of a 12-step program, I was able to go from a homeless shelter and no hope to a pretty darn good life today. Don liked to drink like I used to drink. After a handful of meetings, I suggested that he try something different in his life. I told him BHP has great services and we could really help him if he just let go of some trust issues. I suggested he try something different. He finally agreed. I guided Don to our CARE NOW clinic where he was evaluated. I then suggested he give our Resource Center a go and he agreed. Don stated to me he was amazed at the progress he was making. "All I had to do was let go of a little bit and figure out that you aren't here to steer me wrong." With the help of the Resource Center, Don got the keys to his new place. I see him every so often and we have a laugh and share a bit of gratitude. We talk about how our lives get a little better by viewing the success stories of others. Don states he is trying to spread the good word of change.

This Giving Tuesday, BHP wants you to remember who your gift supports.

"I am a gratefully recovering addict and I am called Paula. I was born May 23rd, 1981. I was born with my parents married but it didn’t take my mom long to file a divorce from her very abusive husband. At the ripe age of two, I was raised in a broken family. I lived with my mom and visited my dad on the weekends. My life wasn’t so uncommon…until it was.
At twelve, I began stealing and skipping school, so my mom decided to send me to live with my dad thinking he could get me under control. That began the process of my life destruction. That’s when I became aware that my father was a raging alcoholic and drug addict. That was just the tip of the iceberg. He was a very sick man and after six months of extreme sexual, mental and physical abuse. A friend on mine went to the school counselor and told was I was going through.
I went through a long-drawn-out process, and he was eventually sentenced to 55 years in prison. That seems like a long time although not as long as the life sentence of hell I felt like I was sentenced to. It wasn’t long before I turned to drinking and drugging to mask my feelings and fears. I’ll save all the heartaches and heartbreaks I put my family and children through for another time, but I will say this, after 25 years and 3 prison numbers, Courage House and their staff have literally saved my life and presented me with an opportunity to live life like a normal being. To be the daughter my mother deserves and the mother my children deserve as well as the woman my love deserves for me to be. I’m finally able to recognize my feeling and behaviors and identify underlying issues so that I can fix them and be the person I’ve always dreamed of being. I don’t have to live angry or in fear anymore and I don’t have to mask my issues with drugs anymore. I can deal with life on life’s terms, one day at a time. This program truly is giving me my life back and I will be forever grateful. I am free and no longer a prisoner no matter my location."

HAPPY THANKSGIVING FROM BHP 💙

11/26/2025

At 8 years old, Sarah was having explosive behaviors in the mornings at home. Her mom, Kim, gave her two options to either be grounded or to talk to someone. Sarah chose to speak with someone at the Care Now Clinic. When she was brought back, a team member worked with her on understanding her behavior and reactions. As they worked together, Sarah learned how to communicate differently with her mom as well as some de-escalation techniques. Towards the end of the session, Kim was speaking directly to our Intervention Specialist and while they were talking, the daughter came up and started to hug her mother and seek comfort. Kim, in shock, froze and shared that Sarah had never done anything like this before.
This is just one of the thousands of stories we get to be thankful for at BHP this season. Please know that we are here for you always.
Happy Thanksgiving!
