• Mission

The mission of LeadingAge Maine & New Hampshire is to inspire our members to pursue innovation and the best life for older adults.

• History

Northern New England Association of Homes & Services for the Aging (NNEAHSA) was founded on May 18, 1984, at a meeting of representatives of 13 long-term care facilities from Maine and New Hampshire. In January, 1985, an affiliation agreement was signed with the American Association of Homes for the Aging (AAHA), which then became the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA), and now LeadingAge. Over the years, NNEAHSA, then Aging Services of Maine & New Hampshire, and now LeadingAge Maine & New Hampshire, has grown steadily under the guidance of numerous dedicated volunteers and staff. The member organizations include nursing homes, assisted living facilities, independent living, federally-assisted and market-rate housing units, home- and community-based services, adult day, memory care, and continuing care retirement communities.

• Why Choose a Non-Profit? Setting the Standard: The not-for-profit’s objective is to provide the highest quality and most compassionate care to those they serve. By continuing a tradition of mission-driven, consumer-centered management and competent, hands-on care, not-for-profits set the standard in the continuum of housing, care and services for the most vulnerable Americans. Mission-Driven Values: Not-for-profit organizations manage their financial resources in accordance with their missions. Many of these housing and service providers were founded by faith-based and civic groups of rich tradition, and their long-standing values are reflected in their governance and management. They are not driven by daily pressure to increase their “bottom line” for owners, investors or shareholders. Quality, not earnings, is the barometer of a not-for-profit organization’s efforts. Accountability: Not-for-profit organizations are accountable to voluntary boards of directors who donate their time and talent to ensure that ethical management, financial integrity and quality services are maintained. Not-for-profit finances are always open for public inspection; with such information readily available on the Internet, the information is literally at our fingertips. Not-for-profit providers' fidelity to their roots and missions requires that they fulfill their obligations of service to their surrounding communities. This is especially true today, when governments are scrutinizing the degree to which not-for-profits provide benefits to their communities.

This is what strategic thinking looks like!

Yesterday over 70 individuals from providers across New England came together to envision opportunities despite challenging times in the field of aging services. The Senior Leaders Retreat has been a signature summer event for LeadingAge Maine & New Hampshire for several years. We were so pleased to partner this year with LeadingAge Massachusetts, LeadingAge Connecticut, and LeadingAge Rhode Island.

Thank you to all who joined us and to our gracious host, Piper Shores.

Another LeadingAge Maine & New Hampshire Annual Conference & Expo is in the books!

Over 250 people joined us for a jam-packed program that included futurist Garry Golden, lean-in breakouts, a Solutions Showcase featuring Gold & Silver Business Partners, a Backyard BBQ-themed expo and culinary contest, a thought-provoking resident panel, a "Workforce Wednesday" workshop on accountability, and the Innovation Exchange -- lighting rounds where members shared out of the box programs and initiatives.

It was a BLAST! Thanks to all who attended. We can't wait for next year!

We remain gravely concerned about the proposed regulations and ask DHHS to pursue a truly collaborative process to determine the best path forward.

Proposed changes to rules governing assisted living in Maine were developed without meaningful provider input, industry advocates say.

ADVOCATING FOR OLDER ADULTS! Thank you to Beth Vettori and Rebecca Daniels from Kendal at Hanover and Michael Flaherty from Taylor Community for taking part in Hill visits as part of the LeadingAge Leadership Summit! We met with Rep. Goodlander and knowledgeable staff in the offices of Sen. Shaheen, Sen. Hassan and Rep. Pappas.
